Title: Tune of the Month for April 2011 - La Roulante / The LNB Polka
Post by: Clive Williams on April 01, 2011, 12:52:17 AM
Here we go folks - a modern composition that's become a session classic, La Roulante, also known (thanks to Blowzabella) as the LNB Polka. It was originally written by Jean Blanchard.

Courtesy of Lester (cheers!), here's an ABC:

Code: [Select]

G2 E2 BGEB|GE B2 B2 AG|A2 B2 ABAG|F2 E2 D4||

... and while we get round to recording our own versions, here's a couple of different versions:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1SuI1EiMGY (2nd tune)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMp1vZYdwY0 (1st tune)

and courtesy of Anahata,

http://ethelscats.co.uk/mp3/04LNB.mp3 (1st tune)

It fits very nicely on a standard 2 row melodeon (no accidentals needed), and I wonder, can it be played on a 1 row? Interesting challenge not for the faint of heart, but probably I think.

So good luck everyone, and looking forward to seeing lots of recordings of the tune. As it's a recent composition, please credit the composer as Jean Blanchard when you post your recording to youtube or onmvoice.

Cheers,

Clive

And whilst I am wide awake and particularly nit-picky at this ungodly hour - of course there is an accidental in the tune (Cnat when played in D)  ;D

I agree with Lester that the tune is 'La Roulante' - I used to play this in a French session in Nottingham around 20 years ago...and it was normally played slower..

Identical to Jean Blanchard's tune (to the best of my ABC sight reading ability, and unless this is a poisson d'avril conspiracy)
Slower, it would make a nice scottish.

No accidentals if you leave the C# out of the key sig. There isn't a C# in the tune. Call it D Mixolydian and you're set.
I shall see what happens if I play it on a G 1 row.

Right. time to pour that coffee and wake up....

Quite right Lester and all - just got this message back from Alan Lamb himself - he says:

Quote
Clive no objections to you using the LNB polka except that contrary to popular opinion I didn't write it! I wrote the LNB Bop with which it is confused. Blowzabella put the polka in a tune book because they had heard us playing it and gave it the name but it is written by one of the French usual suspects. If I can find out who I will let you know.

I think we can safely assume it's Jean Blanchard's La Roulante then! I'll change the title of the thread, etc.

Cheers,

Clive

Tres mauvais! Fortunately, I have friends :D And failing that, I have Google Translate  ;D

I've got an LP of Jean Blanchard's Accordion Diatonique around here somewhere - and look it's on Spotify too! No Roulante on that album though.

On his facebook page (yes, he has one)

In case anyone thought he might be technologically inept, we had the honour of Jean Blanchard as a house guest for a few days last July. One morning I got an email from him, sent from his MacBook all the way from downstairs to upstairs via the neighbours' unsecured WiFi and Googlemail. A considerable amount of musical material was subsequently exchanged via USB pendrives...

The pipes are his main instrument now. He had a go on my melodeon and concluded that he'd almost forgotten how to play it.

When he first arrived, I had no idea that he was famous. Enlightenment dawned slowly over the weekend, and only from other people's reactions.

I didn't have any opinion about his technological merits. I was just surprised because to me he was still the guy from the pre-internet 1975 album cover.  :D

still thinking of other options but this will do.

A few miscued fingers, (but a  couple of those are also opportunities when I look back at them).

All the best

The Gentiane recording was absolutely iconic in my musical and melodeon life. I play many many tunes from that record.

La Roulante is a (bag)pipe tune and it should be played in G on a GC (or A on an AD) melodeon, IMHO.

A bit prescriptive, don't you think. While G/C melodeon's are common on the continent, they are very much in the minority in England, where D/G melodeons are the most common. Surely, you are not suggesting that anyone who does not have a G/C box should not play La Roulante. The whole essence of the kind of music we play is that there are no rules (or very few) and that we adapt the tunes to suit our instruments and ourselves.

PS I agree with Bob, and stand by my first post, although I do like the tonality of the keys in this post, (and found a different bass run).

I would normally play this tune in D on a G/D melodeon, in the lower octave.
So here it is on a G/C melodeon in G, played in the upper octave.  Had to re-programme my fingers entirely.

It's immaterial to me what key it 'should' be in - I've only got a D/G! Here's a pretty straightforward version. La Roulante/LNB (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rO_HlcOPwn0)

Very interesting!! What's wrong with polkas, if you don't mind me asking? I don't think your playing is sloppy at all, it sounds good!

For once, it seems I'm able to learn this tune (and it's only the 3rd of this month yet, I'm impressed!), but could someone please help me with the chords? Either in G on the G/C box or D on the D/G box. I can't find one single chord that fits when I go to the inner row (3rd note, pull). Haven't checked the ABC file yet though, maybe there are chords there (but usually not)?

Thanks! There's probably nothing wrong with polkas, just with me. It reminds me too much of bouncing people or of the Bayern style polka music which I'm not too fond of. Of course there's plenty of nice polkas but somehow I don't like playing too many polka stuff. The harmonics part has lots of unintended keypresses, but I'm glad you didn't notice  ;)

;D Hahaha, I know what you mean with the Bayern style.... I had an overdose of polkas when I lived in Ireland (West Cork = polka land) but mainly because I played the bouzouki and polkas are NO fun to pay on the zouk. I love playing them on the box though:)

The way I play it (in D on a D/G box), the whole of the A music is placed against the D/A basses except the second half of bars 1,2, 5 and 6, which are played against Em basses. For the B music, I use Em basses against the whole of bars 1,2, 5 and 6 (except for the last beat of bar 6, which requires a reversal to a Bm chord) and I use D/A basses against bars 3,4, 7 and 8.

I am sure there are more imaginative bass accompaniments that can be devised, but this works for me. If the explanation is not sufficiently clear, let me know and I will post the musical score of my interpretation.

You would think so, wouldn't you? But on both the boxes on which I play it, the E minor sounds better (more understated) to my ear than the somewhat strident C major. Perhaps I should see about having my ears retuned!

Excellent! This the version I have been waiting for. Thank You.
What I meant in my earlier post is that, on a GC box, you can play this tune only in G because of the important F natural.
On a D/G melodeon, of course you can play either in D or in A. When you play in A on a DG, it would be a pipe-friendly version for sessions with Border or Small pipes. My comment was that a pipe tune is expected to be played in a pipe-friendly key.
If you have Irish pipers (with concert-pitch pipe sets) in your sessions they will play the tune in D, though.

Another option with the A part is to play a drone in D on a D/G (or G on a G/C etc). Takes a bit of thinking to do, but sounds quite bagpipey.

That's a great effect, especially if you play it that way for one of the repeats, and the "normal way" the rest.

I had a sick day from work today, so what better to do than arrange, record, and post! I arranged La Roulante here for diatonic accordion, two piccolos, three trombones, and a percussion ensemble. Also, there are some snippets of a Cajun piece, the name of which I cannot recall. My use of temple blocks is inspired by James MacMillan's "Veni, Veni Emmanuel"; and the heavy brass by that master of color Sven-David Sandström. Enjoy!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POOXS2O_ZXw

If you want to play along, I attach the midi. Just change ".txt" to ".mid". (And if you wish to record a better performance than my weak diatonic skills allow, then please send me the wav and I will mix it in. :)

To my ears, La Roulante fits with it nicely.

Thanks for the kind comments everyone! By the way, I forgot to mention that I am playing in C on a G/C Hohner, but it is a Merlin II model, which has two extra buttons giving four accidentals, including the needed Bb.

Amazing what you can do in a day! Bonus points for identifying the movie clips?

Btw.. does anyone know what kind of tune La Roulante is? I'm not sure if Jean Blanchard wrote any polka's, but the start of the B-part doesn't sound like a scottish to me. An dro perhaps?

Bonjour,

Merci d'avoir choisi un de mes morceaux pour votre "morceau du mois", c'est un plaisir.
Je vous donnes bien sûr la permission de joeur la Roulante.

Cordilement, Jean Blanchard

Bob, what a great video..very entertaining. I think the Cajun tune is "Je Vu le Loup". Non?

"I saw the wolf, the fox, the weasel" .. seems to be ubiquitous in Francophone areas. They sing it for rondos in Brittany (different tune) and I think it's also trad playground dance.  I just love this version - I heard it first like this from early Cutting/Wood - so I had sort of 'assumed' Québécios - is it done there too?

Here's my shot at this month's TOTM - it sounded to me rather like it would make a decent Parisian (ish) waltz, so here we are, Valse Roulante!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etFQaGiKh08

The original "vision", such as it was, was to play it on a D/G with a falling bass line on the A music like this: D-C-Bm-Am-G-F#m-Em-[AD]; unfortunately, I rather liked playing it on the Preciosa more, so it got turned back into an 8 bass version with another Bm substituted for the F#m chord.

I've used different recording stuff this month, so for simplicity, no lovely movie of me playing this month; you get a piccie of the Preciosa instead (in the style of Sandy ;D ) ; iMovie+Garageband are out; Mixcraft+Windows Movie Maker in. Mixcraft is, I have to say, just fantastic. I'm trying an evaluation copy after hearing what Almo's done with it, and I'm *very* impressed; I will almost certainly buy it. Thanks for the heads up Almo! Windows Movie Maker; less impressed - I might use something else for that next month.

Enjoy,

Clive

You have been busy this morning Clive ;D Your Preccy is sounding gorgeous as always. Is it just me or does the waltz version bear a passing similarity to one of the themes from Cats? Can't remember which one.

Clive, a lovely sensitive arrangement as usual. And indeed the Preciosa does sound excellent.
Almo, a proper rhythmic version sounding just like melodeon music should, imho.

Here's my shot at this month's TOTM - it sounded to me rather like it would make a decent Parisian (ish) waltz, so here we are, Valse Roulante!

Mixcraft+Windows Movie Maker in.

Enjoy,

Clive

Clive - I just read your comments on Mixcraft 5 - it is really good, as you say. Much easier that CuBase and some nice sounds in there that can be used.
You can record video with a webcam - and drop the file into Mixcraft to edit the sound - then save it as a Window Media File...

The video editor I use is Corel Video Studio Pro4 - version five is out now - and that's easy to use too...

Glad you found it useful Clive..

Alan

I haven't posted a tune of the month for a while so here is my shot at La Roulante/LNB polka:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkLf1yy7n5U

It's a great tune and the first time I have come across it.  I have really enjoyed listening to all the versions so far posted and there is obviously so much you can do with it.  I am afraid that mine is a very simple version (unfortunately with a little falter!!!)  :-[

It is played on my new (second hand) Castagnari Tommy D/G melodeon.  I played it straight to webcam which, sadly, does seem to be slightly fuzzy.

Hi all,

I've not been around for  a while, so here's a belated go at La Roulante. Better video quality than usual, though do excuse the bouncy leg and a couple of bum notes and rhythms. Some fantastic versions precede my efforts, I've enjoyed them all, so I hope this fairly straight version sits well...

Looking forward to the next one,

Hmm... I started playing it in the lower octave and when I played it in the higher octave, there was some weird finger twist to reach one of the tones so I always made mistakes there....  ;) From the beginning I planned to record it playing it twice, once in the lower and once in the higher octave but I just made too many errors...

Thanks btw!

Compliments(again) of folk photographer Jeff Dantin - notre homme grand, Jean blanchard  - bearded with hat in the centre.

I had the pleasure (on a different day) of thanking Jean for his kind permission to explore la Roulante. The year that Blanchard and several other bagpipers abseiled down the front of St Charter castle playing their bagpipe as a spectacle is still fondly remembered!

It happened because the forum software changes everything that starts with 'http' etc to a link, it assumes everything from the 'http' until there is a space is part of the link. Unfortunately you followed the link with '...for' so that was added to the link.
