Partly inspired by various threads elsewhere this month, I thought this might be quite an interesting thing to tackle. Pick a tune normally played at dancing speed, perhaps a tune you're familiar with through morris or other dance teams, or a local session, and see what happens when you play it slowly... very slowly. Perhaps even change the time signature in the process? Or even take a slow tune and play it quickly! What interesting variations can we come up with?
Cheers,
Clive

I'm thinking of killing two birds with one stone and playing Brighton Camp as a waltz ;D

I did this so sloppily that I'm going to give it another go tomorrow! :|bl :|bl :|bl

Captains Lanoes Quick March...slowly

I do have a waltz version I'm working on.
Three around three...slowly

These are two tunes I hear played fast...well fast for me. ;)
And here's one I can only play slowly or else I make loads of mistakes

LDT - I've not been able to listen to your tunes - ONMvoice has been awful recently - it looks as if it's loading and then just hangs. Also, since I opened an account up there, I've started getting spam via email - and I've not been able to find security settings to restrict access to my email address there. I usually try and put up a YouTube version of my playing for the TOTM and ThOTM. I know I should start a separate thread, 'ONMvoice is Rubbish', but it also is relevant here as I've not been able to get to your slow tunes which is annoying.

Thought this fitted the fast tunes played slowly theme
Steamboat hornpipe (and as you can see I started to get the rhythm right last time round)

No problems with ONMvoice. It seems to change from day to day.

well I had a go at this and its quite amazing how much concentration it takes to play some tunes slowly.
For a bit of fun I have recorded La Valse Clogue slowly which was difficult. I then did it quicker which was actually much easier.
So next I did Out on the Ocean slowly....on a more serious note ;o) because I do like this tune played slowly.

Lovely playing Roland

Thanks Almo,
It's actually quite an interesting thing to do because you have to really think where you are going.
I enjoyed doing it, especially trying to play the Clogg Waltz slowly! ;o)

Here's my go at this month's theme: 2 traditional jigs, The Carraroe and Spirit of the Dance -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4jkseFwC_M
I think they're both lovely tunes, and much nicer taken slowly than the usual 'ramming speed' found in sessions when tunes like this come up. I have to confess I don't think the speed I use here is actually that much slower than dancing speed, but it's certainly slower than session speed! ::)
Played on my 12 bass preciosa in Bb/Eb which is proving to be the versatile little box I always hoped it would be!
Cheers,
Clive

Clive - You could certainly dance to the tunes at that speed - nicely played - almost hypnotic.
-
Clive, you've properly showed us the way with this month's theme which I'm continuing to struggle with. No less than we'd expect - lovely playing and sound.

Hi all,
Here is my first try on the TOTM section
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NS5skeXGZYg
It's a jig (the Quilty Shore), played much slowly than usual.
Hope you'll like it.

The link works but.... comes up as "This video is private."

You've marked it private!
-
Wooohoups, it seems it's the default setting on my account, sorry
Does it work now ?

Excellent playing and sound - and nicely illustrating the theme. (:)

Here's my contribution. Tripping Upstairs played (moderately) slowly on the Hohner Pressed Wood D/G (via Mike Rowbotham). I didn't want to slow it right down to be a waltz but probably should have reduced the tempo a bit more. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJe2zX-OuPM

I've put theme of the month and tune of the month into one video, as they are both quite short
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HTdSjpSN4E4
The first one is the slow tune. "Polly Put The Kettle On", apart from being a children's song and also found as a reel is several northern dance tune collections, seems to have an alternate existence as a Scottish-style slow air...
Then Brighton Camp, played absolutely straight except for the duff notes :|bl

OK, here's my new entry -- the Valcartier Set played slowly.

Skirmish, by Nick Barber.
I wanted to catch the development of the 'arrangement', rather the final polished product, hence the mistakes and length of the video.
Enjoy.

An excellent contribution to this theme, Ollie - just what's required imho. Nice to see and hear your new box too. (:)

Nice playing, Ollie! The Beltuna sounds lovely too! The buckle protectors aren't doing much good like that though ;)

@DTN & Almo - lovely playing and fab sounds, as always, both of you. Derek - Lester'll want to know which box you were playing - he's probably not the only one! ;)

Princess Royal played as a waltz
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g00Hc3AN05s (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g00Hc3AN05s)
I was making this up as I went along so please excuse the bum notes and the dodgy melodeon face ;)
Played on my Super Pokerwork.

Ah yes. Here's The Princess Royal Waltz that I submitted for another TOTM

and a new one: The Connaughtman's Rambles as a waltz. Originally learned from the playing of Mairtin O'Connor.

End of the month folks; time to move onto the next theme! As ever, if you've got any late postings, please continue to stick them here.
