That was a close run poll this month!
Our winner this time is Oh Joe the Boat is Going Over - a classic polka from East Anglia (in England); and here is Gavin Atkin playing a nice clean version in D: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BoL07qRXGI
I don't have ABC to hand, but hopefully some kind soul will be along in a bit with some? Ah, found some. Courtesy of Gavin, at the Frittenden site http://frittendenfestival.com/free-traditional-music-classes-at-the-gun-and-spitroast-horsmonden/, we have this:
http://frittendenfestival.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Oh-Joe-the-Boat-is-Going-Over.txt
... and printed music here:
http://frittendenfestival.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Gun-and-Spitroast-classes-11th-May-2011-Oh-Joe-the-Boat-is-Going-Over-and-Walter-Bulwers-Polkas-2-and-11.pdf
Now that the festival season's over, let's see if we can get a good number of recordings again this month, so dust off that webcam and play us your version of this wonderful tune!
Cheers,
Clive

Not quite the East Anglian standard but an attempt at the version used for the Minehead Hobbyhorse (with apologies to any Melnetters with an involvement in that tradition, please take this as a homage, living at the other end of the country I have never made it down but it is on my list of "things to do when I retire" :||: :|glug :Ph).

That doesn't work. I think what you had there was a temporary file for downloading just after you'd created it.

Ooh, that's handy. :)
Guess what tune I've been practicing on one row in preparation for saturday. :|||:

you are right, Anahata, here is a pdf.

-
Thankyou (:) I LOVE my Binci, but I love all my other boxes as well! I reckon the 4 stop is best for Old Joe, trad style.

Mary Humphreys' maiden voyage on melodeon and YouTube.
Bill (folkbluesnbeyond) has correctly pointed out that this is not strictly true, citing this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGmTMQzp-fw
Which was Mary's first time with a 1-row in front of an audience.
However, this time it's a solo performance...

Hi Miklos
Hohners seem to suit my playing and the circumstances in which I play. I have a couple of restored boxes, but the others are simply old friends which may be better maintained than I am!
All the best
-
I have a couple of restored boxes
I love your Hohner Erika(s) (2.4) and Hohner Club (2.7), the brown wood finish three voice. Since I've seen your (and Ollie's) videos, I'd like to have the same models.

Oh, Joe played on one row four stop in C
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZ4oq8-9PdU
(that was about take 50...just kept messing it up. And I find the one row quite tiring so my playing had slowed down considerably by this take)

Here's my offering for this tune played in C on the restored early 20thC. GCF Hohner which, incidentally, is still for sale - see Theo's website for details. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1fd3IJf8UI

The box sounds great!

I am trying to resist buying this box from Theo and this video is not helping!! ;)

Haven't posted TOTM for a while (I did actually "learn" most of the tunes) so here's my version.
I'd forgotten how intimidating cameras are - i cut out the middle section cause I fluffed it ::)
This is for Jochen who should be posting soon!

I don't listen to many of the TOTM recording, I don't know why, just one of those things. After reading your comments elsewhere about your disatisfaction with your progress etc. I downloaded your video with a little trepidation ... how wrong!
Your recording could teach many of us "more experienced" players a thing or two about speed, control and actually learning the tune properly. It's making me rethink my own approach to this tune yet again.
I think you've pretty much nailed the Oscar Woods' version of Oh Joe. There is a simple (even stark) beauty to the tune that I think you caught perfectly.

Thanks to you both. Glad you enjoyed it.
Its not too slow and lackluster then?

Now, here is my first tune for TOTM.

I played this tune on a Hohner Corso in A/D.

I've made the mistake of watching everyone else before I have a go at recording one. They all really are great!
Feeling quite out-gunned and outclassed really. For some reason I'm struggling learning this one. I think some tunes just don't fit my fingers!!
Onwards and upwards!
-
Feeling guilty that I haven't put much on TOTM over the summer....this is my 'swift' go at 'one row style' on a two row box !
Still not sure exactly how the emphasis should be on the basses for an East Anglian style ? although I did listen to Oscar Woods on Spotify :-)
loved the feel of this tune more than hearing myself play it :P

Some lovely versions so far everyone - keep them coming!
For what it's worth, here's my version of this tune...
the Oh Joe Bourree!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAhod-Zay_8
(although I suspect it may end up being called the Oh No Bourree ;D )
Have been wondering how to play this tune for a while, and it was probably going to be a standard version... until I tried tweaking the ABC to Mixolydian mode in my favourite ABC editor (for those interested, I used Gavin's ABC as linked to in the first post of this thread as my starting point). And suddenly, it sounds *completely* different - I can't believe changing one note changes so much, but on this tune it seems to. As soon as I started playing this version, something else happened - it turned naturally into a Centre France style 2 time bourree... and a very good one at that! It reminds me very much of the sort of tune much loved by French bagpipers, and it has quite some drive to it too. So "all" I had to do then was learn it!
Here it's played on a standard 8 bass Hohner Club C/F, declubbed, and most of the action goes on in the first 6 buttons or so of the inside row, with only a small sidestep for a bar or two onto the outside row for a phrase in the A music... so the key comes out as C mixolydian.
Cheers,
Clive

Is this an example of what was recently discussed on a Bellows control post as "pulsing"?

There should be an attachment here but I can't see it.
Hope I'm allowed to do this, hate to be chucked off first day. From about 1995, how technology has moved in such a short space of time.

Bravo! (yes the MP3 is there)
Welcome to melnet...

Goes to show how tunes change over time. I wonder if anyone will dare post a performance singing the song ;D

The tune was more fun this month than I had expected it to be, largely because of the wide variety of interesting submissions that it has produced. Thanks to everyone for the inspiration!

A quick search found the following video of it being sung... can't really hear the words but the music hall spirit is there. Thanks to our Ladydetemps for the video.
The song starts after about a minute.

I've really enjoyed the one-row style of the various versions, and the push-pull spirit of the two-rows.

Here's (attatched) a low-res mp3 of a larger line-up of the same band over 20 years ago preceded by the Essex singer Harry Green mentioned in Mike Yeates' article on the above link. The piano part mentioned was used in the attachment I posted yesterday

A bit different...... An evil thought popped into my head.......
Old Joe played as a waltz on my Hohner Ouverture IV, 'The Beast' . You'll notice I keep looking at my right hand - I'm still trying to master the Club system!

I tried to play as fast as I could manage.
Oh Joe
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5jvAwZ26cM
Which explains the little stumbles. (Which in a session I could 'hide' but in a video..solo there's nothing I can do. And by then I'd run out of time to start again.)
