Just one day at the festival but I heard three excellent players. I mentioned Timi Turmel last year, but he has now moved on to playing a two row as well as a one. The two row seems to be a D/C#, which is an interesting approach for an expert D player. Daniel Payne, from Newfoundland, provided a very fine introduction to the music of Newfoundland. And then Andy Cutting, who many of you know much better than I do. One of the interesting things was guitar accompaniment. I must admit Turmel's guitar player was not to my taste: he seemed to get in the way some times and I wasn't convinced he was in tune. On the other hand, Jean Hewson, playing for Daniel Payne, was exemplary: beautiful and stylish, moving with and outside the tune as needed. But Ian Carr, playing for Andy Cutting, was quite amazing. He was all over the place. What a creative player! Some might find it too much but it seemed to work with what Cutting played, like Hewson moving in and out but at times sweeping over in ways that just produced more music. I suspect it depended on two players who know each other well and can adapt expertly.

Really good guitar accompaniment is something that I have also come to appreciate, and several years back at La Grande Rencontre I finally realized what aspects I appreciated the most. Listening to Guy Bouchard and Peter Senn accompanying fiddlers, I realized that when a guitarist listens very carefully, he or she can guide the listener in a new way of hearing a tune, and also highlight a particular fiddler's style.
Sounds like a great festival! I've always wanted to attend, but the particular weekend is always at a very busy time for me. Enjoy and tell us more.
