Title: residential melodeon courses?
Post by: boisterous budgie on December 28, 2011, 07:02:20 PM
Hi everyone
Where could I find more information about residential melodeon and folk music courses in the UK? Are there any good festivals that include music classes for several days? (Last year I went to Damada http://damadafestival.blogspot.com/p/infos-pratiques.html (http://damadafestival.blogspot.com/p/infos-pratiques.html) in France and for those who speak French there are lessons during the day and lots of dancing in the evenings. And I wondered if there was anything similar in UK).
Thanks!

Both Whitby and Sidmouth week long folk festivals in August  have  a selection melodeon workshops and musicians sessions as well as a lot of other stuff.  The melodeon workshops are nearly all focusing on DG boxes.

Halsway Manor is worth checking out - http://www.halswaymanor.co.uk/

Folk Camps are a bit more informal - http://www.folkcamps.co.uk/

JS Arts is also worth a look - http://jsarts.co.uk/diary.html

Not strictly residential in that you have to book separate accommodation, but three excellent melodeon courses that have not been mentioned so far are Melodeons at Witney (Oxfordshire in November), Festival des Panards (French meldoeon workshops in Otley in October) and Darlington (also October). All have websites, but for Melodeons at Witney you may need to search under Hands on Music.

Yes, Darlington and Witney run very good courses with first-rate tutors.

Folk Camps run great holidays, but I wouldn't recommend them for specialist tuition in an instrument, that's not really what they do.

There is also Folkworks Summer School in Durham city in August.  There is usually a melodeon option,  last year it was shared between Andy Cutting and Julian Sutton.  It is residential at Collingwood College, part of Durham University. 2012 dates are 6th to 10th August.

Thank you so much for all the wonderful tips!!  I realize now that it might be a problem that I play a GC box for group tuition...

The workshops at Festival des Panards at Otley in October cater for GC boxes.
