OK folks, it's back - we did this a couple of years ago (that long? Blimey), and I think it's high time we tried it again! Here's the plan:
How about having a go at writing a new tune, recording it and sharing it with us all? If you've never done this sort of thing before, here's your excuse to give it a try!
I'm sure there'll be plenty of interesting discussion about how to go about this, but here's a few starting thoughts.
- Try making up a tune in your head; whistle/hum it to yourself, record yourself singing it (just for you of course - so you don't forget it!) before you go anywhere near picking up a melodeon.
- A completely different approach. Come up with a time signature (waltz/reel/....) that you like. Mess around on the bass end of a melodeon and come up with a chord sequence you like. Write a chunk of melody to fit the chord sequence.
- If you're lucky enough to be able to play a different instrument (piano, etc), try doodling on that. When you come up with something you like... record yourself again, before you pick up the melodeon. And then learn to play it on the melodeon!
Good luck! Give it a try; you may have a undiscovered talent!
Cheers,
Clive

Another June tune :o
"The First of June" which I wrote for ToTM in 2010 has now been paired up with another of mine called "The Essex Girl", is part of our regular session repertoire and has made it on to an album that Mary and I recorded recently and will be out very soon!
And Clive - your Parsley's Hornpipe (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1mAQI1FT2g) is now in use by Pig Dyke Molly.
Have any other of June 2010's tunes grown up and developed lives of their own?
Good advice up there on how go go about it. One of the odd things about tune writing is that it gets easier if you make limitations. Decide quite arbitrarily, for example, that it's got to be a Mazurka in A minor and the job's half done! Or take a bar or two from a tune you like, and grow a new one around it. Or write a palindromic tune...

Here's a tune I recorded a couple of weeks ago. As you may be able to tell, I didn't have a clue how I was going to finish it off at the end & I ... err ... improvised! I actually think it sounds better a little higher on my BbEb Hohner, so I'll try & post another version with an actual ending! :||:

OK, here's one of mine I use fairly regularly playing for ceilidhs. This particular recording I had to hand as it's one I did some years ago in collaboration with the guitarist I was working with at the time - hence the guitar "feature" in the last two turns but one. The box is the good old faithful Pastourelle II. http://soundcloud.com/mrkoilani/the-phantom-lobster (http://soundcloud.com/mrkoilani/the-phantom-lobster)

Written yesterday morning, third ever tune wot i have writ, last one in Dec 1983.
http://youtu.be/BXt4aaoVjok
Wrote it on guitar and then tidied up the loose ends and worked out what key it was really in.
Aimed for a tune that would work on 4 stop etc as says in the blurb on YT
If I have managed the technology a PDF of the dots should be attached.
All the best

In the time honoured tradition of me writing a song that's too hard for me to actually play properly here's my first submission to Melnet. You'll notice I only successfully play it once through, but hopefully you'll get the picture. I wrote it this afternoon, after I got back from Chippenham.
It would have been a video but I'm a bit unsightly after a weekend camping in the rain!

A very nice tune. I like that sound of the lower notes but would be interested to hear the difference on the BbEb.
-
Might well give this a go, although I do worry about writing something that sounds exactly like some tune already extant. I'm sure you'll all tell me if so. :D

My thought exactly. It seems highly improbable that, given the limited possibilities present on a melodeon, I would come up with something nobody has ever punched up before! Whatever ... doodling on a melodeon's fun! :||:

OK then, here we go - very hesitant, very simple, not very original, sounds like I'm making it up as I go along but that's what happens when I press record. But I am inspired by all these top quality tunes that people have submitted. On a 1040 pokerwork. Bianca in Osdorp.

This has been in my head for a while, and has now emerged. It came from the realisation that beginners try to play tunes that are far too complex - players of other instruments, like 'cello, fiddle, piano, start by learning how to play scales and arpeggios.
So here it is , a simple jig in G mostly using scales. It can also be sued to practice playing at the 'dusty' end ;D (see video).
Played on a Hohner Club II, reeds fettled and tuned to D/G by Theo. This is it's first outing on Melnet.
I've named the tune in honour of the ups and downs of the Pasty tax and Caravan tax - it's called Osborne's Mistake >:E
Enjoy:

Here's a little something I came up with last weekend; only just had the chance to record it, so here we are... I present, on the Hohner Preciosa in Bb/Eb, with a little help from a Garageband backing band :o , a simple little waltz I've called Jubilee
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWo7qJJITY0
Obviously, with what was going on last weekend, it was a little easier to name the tune than usual!
A few notes on how it was put together ... this is a 'melody hung on a chord sequence' tune. The A music was done first, starting with putting together a (in D/G speak) sequence of G-D-C-D, played in Chordbot on an iPad; a very simple sequence, but one of my favourites, and I use it for just about everything I play in G! Then, having written the treble music for the A, find a complimentary chord sequence for the B music. Once I'd chosen that, play a few different things through, and bob's your uncle.
Here it's played on the 12 bass Bb/Eb Preciosa, which lets me do a lot smoother chords than usual, not that that really matters when you've got a backing track, but it actually plays fine on a standard 2 row 8 bass box, providing you've got an A minor (in D/G speak again) or thirds off your A chord, which is the first chord of the B music.
Cheers,
Clive

My main box is with Theo at the moment, so press "Play" on the noteflight menu for an electronic version. Just come back from Soller in mallorca, walking in the hills while wife sunbathed.... and I had a nice time whistling tunes to myself, and sitting under a tree to jot them down. This one's named after one of the streets beginning a walk.
...edit
Just been trying this out on the Hascy in E minor. And the box is calling for revisions... including removing those f sharps and g sharps (except as a variation) and introducing sycopations instead to the B2. So will be revising the noteflight eventually. (those sharps were a UK addition anyway)

Actually wrote and recorded a rough version a few months ago. It is called Le Mushroom because it sounds french (based on a tune for a Breton dance called an "An Dro"). The time signatures are 3/2, 2/2, 1/2.
Originally recorded in Am and edited to Gm because I ideally wanted it in that key but don't have a box to play it easily on.

Hi everyone, a melodeon returnee and forum newby here. 1st post - gulp!
After much umming and ahhing, I decided to give the TOTM a go.......but talk about jumping in at the deep end.
http://soundcloud.com/dc12/lesters-club (http://soundcloud.com/dc12/lesters-club)
I used to play (I prefer the word dabble) the melodeon in the early 90's, but a loss of confidence meant I just stopped playing altogether. This was around 1998. As a consequence I sold my 2 of my 3 melodeons - I hung on to one of them, a Hohner Club, but due to never playing it I eventually sold it via eBay to none other than Lester back in 2008 - damn fine box that one!
Recently I had occasion to revisit my old cassette tape recordings, I thought well perhaps I wasn't that bad. Hmm - so I decided I would tentatively re-enter the free reed world and bought an old 20 key Lachenal from a local auction - which I very much like. Surprisingly, I managed to play some of my old repertoire on it. A month or so went by, and I had to do it - I sneaked into a well known folk musical instrument emporium in London and tried a melodeon - oh boy - it was like meeting an old friend (:)
I then knew a Melodeon it had to be. Having got used to the purity of sound of a single reed, and had always hankered after a Lilly all those years ago.......... lo & behold, there on the buy & sell of this forum was a D/G Lilly - and it was still available. It was destiny (:) - so last week I bought it. Yes I am very rusty but am truly amazed the fingers remember where they are going even after all these years.
One of the tunes I wrote way back when was for that C/F club - if I recall correctly the club had an odd chord on what would be the C push on a D/G and this was the only tune I could make use of it. I have started playing this tune again and can just about get there - I can not remember what I originally called it - but the current working title is "Lester's club"
So I thought given within this forum there is link between my melodeon playing demise and return, then perhaps I should offer up a tune - at least it has given me the chance to revisit it if nothing else!
The attached recording is the original 1994 home recording (spot the authentic tape slow down) and not perfect by any means - on a D/G (rather than the original C/F) and was I believe a Jorgina - though I really can not remember (though the Jorgina did go to Rees - yet another forum link).

I really like the sound of this Jack; looking forward to a 'live' version. Don't dispense with the sharps altogether, I think they give extra character to the tune but agree that they might be best featured as a variation.

I've come up with tunes for songs before now but only ever written one tune and that was on guitar. It was a good few years ago and I feel it now sounds 'old fashioned' or 'of it's time' (which, embarassingly was probably the 70s). I was getting totally bogged down but today took delivery of a new (to me) Hohner CF from Theo and just started noodling and have come up with something. I hope I've not unconsciously nicked it. I'd really like people to tell me if I have and, if so, what I've nicked.
I've called the tune 'Here Comes Charlie' because we're hoping to adopt a dog called that later this week who was rescued some time back by the RSPCA from a horrendous situation near Carlisle.

Here's a tune which was adapted for a morris dance.
The "A" part came from a song written by the (then) Squire. It needed a chorus so I wrote the "B" and "C" parts.
I then converted the whole tune from a reel to a jig so that it was more bouncy to dance to!

So there's The Lemonville Jig by Jack Hayes, and last year we went to Canada and passed through Orangeville (including spending some time in a very nice pub there), and I thought if Lemonville can have a tune named after it, why not Orangeville? Not another jig; I've written too many of them recently. A polka? not very Canadian - so here's a Canadian-style reel.

Hmmmmm....I have a great title, just struggling to write a tune that doesn't sound 'familiar' or really repetitive.
-
Repetitive can be good. There are loads of good tunes that repeat the same phrase 3 times (sometimes 4) with slightly different endings. Some even have the A and B parts only differing by a couple of bars - Canal en Octobre being a superb example.

I'm currently on holiday with a friend in the beautiful Cornish village of Polperro. Last night, went for a walk, and ended up stopping on a bench on the eastern headland overlooking the village. It was a gorgeous summer's evening (here are some pictures - http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150913652783178.418330.615573177&type=1) and we ended up playing a few tunes. Then, I started noodling, and the following tune came out. I nearly made my friend cry - it was quite a special moment. I recorded this on my iPhone, on the bench, just after I'd written it. If you listen carefully, you can hear the sea in the background. :)

A tune written to commemorate the bicentennial of the Battle of Queenston Heights from the war of 1812. The battle took place a few miles from where I now live. Queenston Heights is situated on strategic spot, overlooking the Niagara River, about 5 miles downstream from Niagara Falls. The British commander, General Isaac Brock, leading a force of British regulars, Canadian militia & Mohawk warriors faced an invading force of American regulars & militia. The battle was eventually won, but the British lost their most capable soldier - while attempting to re-take the Heights Brock was killed by a musket shot to the chest.

Somewhat hesitantly played, a forced out new tune written with a one row in mind. I tried not to think about chords and texture for a change which might explain a few cliche phrases. I thought it reminded me at times of the Phillipe Bruneau reels and of Yarmouth Breakdown so it's called 'Philippe's Breakdown'. (Played on D row only apart from the last chord (:))

I've been enjoying replaying The Ruby on soundcloud to pick up the tune, but would you mind allowing us to download it from soundcloud? Your suspended chords and basses work really well with the melody to give the tune that lovely feel. Thanks
-
I can give you some information on the chords I use. I don't always play them the same, so rather than trying to copy this particular recording just try some of these:
All the chords are open fifths. This is essential.
Basses have the low note removed, but this is not essential.
I'm using only the standard 8 bass buttons.
I always play the high F# on push so I can play it against a B chord
I use both rows most of the time to keep the phrasing smooth
experiment with the chords, just about any LH chord works in some way at any given point in the tune.
I quite often use the C chord +D bass, especially at the end of a phrase.

Very nice, Theo!
What instrument are you playing?

What instrument are you playing?
A 1990s window Castagnari Mory that I was fortunate to acquire recently, and that I have tuned and revised to my taste. It was originally MMM tuned to a very wet musette, now it is more conventional Castagnari tuning as you can hear.

Here's another little tune that popped out about an hour ago. A mazurka called Calm Before the Storm.

Hope you like it. :)

I do like your tune a lot Ollie....but having a slight problem with Jealousy. More comments after I give it more attention.
After encouragement from EllisSteph, here's my first tune from my Mallorcan walks named after Carrer D'Isabel, the street from Soller Station into the hills. No matter how many times I record, there are always some mistakes, so here it is.

Dots are here, as originally noted, but I've simplified the B music.

Bravo Jack! You beat me to it. I've just returned from a few days away so will post my version shortly. I have to say it's stretched me a bit and it will be the simplified version. But then what is Melnet for if not to improve yourself.

OK, let's try this then! I've created a new 'sticky' 'write a tune' thread in the Recordings and Videos section, here:
http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php/topic,10049.0.html
Let's see if we can't keep this going and have lots more great tunes!
New postings over there please, I'll lock this thread.
Cheers,
Clive
