Here we go folks - this month's winner is the Lemonville Jig - played here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4C4wuQjPbY by Ed Rennie, who says "A fabulous tune from the New World, made popular over here by Northumbrian fiddle player Willy Taylor and features on the album Mouthorgan by Will Atkinson (who was Willy Taylor's cousin as it happens). It was composed by John C (Jack) Hayes, who gets my and everyone else's vote of thanks."
With thanks to Lester, here's some ABC:

It plays nicely on one row, and when played in the usual key of D, can just about be played in the lower octave of a D/G on the outside row, if you have low notes. I'd typically play it an octave up from that though. A cracking little 32 bar jig this, and another useful session tune. Looking forward to hearing lots of different versions of it!
Cheers,
Clive

Nobody's had a stab at this yet, so I tried recording it tonight - a relatively straight version played on the Bb/Eb Preciosa, 4 times through, twice in the upper octave, once in the lower octave, then once in the higher octave to finish.
Unfortunately the video recording I made had a fiery demise due to me trying a new video editing package (unsuccessfully), but the sound recording was ok, so I thought rather than throw the whole thing away, I'd upload the sound file to Soundcloud instead. And here it is:

Here's a version I posted when the ThOTM was 'Tunes from Canada'. I'll 'appen post a version on a different box a bit later in the month.

Probably all I'll manage on this one so posted as is. Have loved the tune since heard Anahata play it in a session about 10 years ago.

Well, this is the best I can do without getting RSI. Thought I'd better put something up! New backdrop and echoing sound - natural kitchen reverb.

Very nice Bill I hope you will be feeling better soon !!
Your totm posting are the ones I go to, your straight to tape style and the fact that you often play a one row helps me learn the tunes if I could only play the bass side like that not to much just enough!!
Take care
Michael

Thank you Micheal for your feedback and best wishes on my initial upload, I am on the mend and found the energy to complete the project.

I thought I would use more chords and cross row playing on the two row, but stuck with 'danceability' instead.
Best regards
Bill

The Lemonville Jig is a bit too jolly for my personal taste. Here's a short attempt to make it a little more melancholy!

Apologies for the poor quality of the video and audio. At some point I'll figure out how to do something about that.

Flatnote, I like it that way! You make me think of my son - he won't play ANYTHING in a major key, and he loves B-minor.

Thanks! The B/C accordion is an excellent instrument for B-minor on the right hand. Unfortunately, there is usually no B Bass or B-minor chord - or indeed any minor chord at all! - on the left hand, so the possibilities for harmony are somewhat limited. If I can find a local tuner I might try getting one of the duplicated C bass/chord pairs swapped for B-minor. Otherwise I might have to switch to a pokerwork!
-
Well, we had a discussion about it before, but after having the Pokerwork for almost 2 months now, I still wish it had a b-minor chord instead of B-major. Am considering which instrument I will get as an upgrade, and am still trying to decide how I want that configured. Will probably at least go with an option to remove the thirds.

I trust you have other reasons for upgrading. Getting a B major chord changed to Bmin on the Pokerwork is a cheaper option if that's all you need doing ;D
-
Even better take out the third from the B chord - a small piece of adhesive tape is all you need, and see how you like no thirds. You can always play a separate D, on either hand if you want a minor, or if your D#/Eb accidental is on push you can add that to make a major.

John Kirkpatrick has a lot of very useful material on minor tunes, including a discussion of B minor, somewhere in his DVD set 'How to Play the English Melodeon'. He starts showing the one row box but later switches to the Pokerwork. I got a lot out of it even though I don't play either instrument, and you can listen to it just for the music alone. He's surely right when he says that you can do a lot with minor tunes on a Pokerwork, and at least it has a left hand minor chord, unlike the modern BlackDot - the older BlackDots did, however, have one for playing against the outer row. On the other hand, nothing is more delightfully miserable than an Irish slow air, and some players manage those with accompaniment on boxes lacking minor chords entirely!
-
I'd like to upgrade for several reasons - mostly, I'd like a low reed. I got the Pokerwork to see if I'd like the instrument (read: be able to play it). But it will be a while. I have to try to sell another instrument first.

Just back from a great week at Folkcamp in Zeilitzheim, Germany. I managed to get a bit of support for a TOTM contribution.

Interesting - I didn't know "Lemonville Jig" prior to this TOTM, and when I listened to it at the start of the month (yet another month when I haven't had time to sit down and learn a tune, let alone make a postable recording), my first thought was "That's very reminiscent of Little Burnt Potato". Seems I'm not alone!

The Lemonville Jig, The Quarrymen and Little Burnt Potato are played as a set around here, and I know we got them like that from someone else. I'm not sure who put them together in the first place, but they (either all three, or various pairings) have certainly been doing the rounds...

I strongly suggest it was Willie Tyalor.

Another Willie Taylor one worth hunting down is 'Alistair J Simm'
-
A yes a great tune and an actual W Taylor composition, one of his finest.
-
A great dancing tune and some fantastic versions here - everyone makes it sound so easy!
But it was indeed very difficult - I think this must be the fastest tune I've attempted so far. Amazing how your fingers start hopping along lopsidedly when trying to keep jig basses going - or is that just me?
I'm hoping that I will come back to this in a year's time and it will play itself a lot better ;D.
Just scraped in on the right month 8) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ADIgJBfxyg&feature=youtu.be

A favourite of the great Northumbrian piper, Joe Hutton. Wonderful player, great tune.

That's all for this tune folks; on to another month! As always, late submissions always welcome! Just stick them on the end...
-
A bit late but covered this tune set at a workshop last weekend tutored by Ian Dedic. I'm not quite sure what I'm doing with any emphasis in the bass rhythm but it's what I do.
Probably won't be a set played out of the comfort of my own home. Love the tunes but found them a bit of headache to learn. The chances of me remembering them are pretty much zero (:)
Played on a Hohner Pressed Wood DG.

Hi All,
You really must check out on YouTube " shoot the sherbet to me Herbert " Tommy Dorsey.
It's nothing to do with the tune of the month, but wow.

Only three years and two months too late, but never mind...
