Sticky Theme: Write a Tune!
« on: August 01, 2012, 12:49:54 AM »

Taking its inspiration from Theme of the Month, here's a sticky thread for people to post their own compositions. There've been some cracking compositions from the 2 Theme of the Month threads, so lets see if we can't continue the tradition here!
Here's the 2 Theme of the Month threads:

http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php/topic,9588.0.html

.... and ...

http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php/topic,4154.0.html

Looking forward to seeing what great new tunes come along - if you've never tried writing a tune before, why not give it a try?

Cheers,

Clive

PS: If we get a bit of momentum going here, I'll create a 'play a melnet user's tune' sticky thread here too...

Brilliant Jack - I've had the version of you and Judith playing together humming round my head the last couple of days! Wonderful :)

Thanks for your kind words and encouragement (please also see that I've uploaded a tune set for you!)

Feeling a need to take up less space on this thred.
So, if you want to hear tunes I have made up,  or see the notations, the "compositions" link is at the foot of this mail.
I'll add to it as I go.  I'd be grateful for constructive comments.

Reply to Air Time about Eugenia Waltz

Thanks for posting. This really provokes the urge to WALTZ! Something about the energy of that special box (and its player). And the form of the tune seems to arise out of the melodeon keyboard.  At first I couldn't quite take in the tune with its long lines...but it certainly repays repeated listening to get in touch with  that unique Simcoeace quality of melody..

Thanks for your comments, Jack. On re-listening it seems to me that:

a) I'm playing it faster than I should.

b) I've compressed the tune a bit more than I should.

c) I'm rather disappointed with the recorded sound of my old Hohner box. It sounds quite different to me when I'm playing - I think because the treble sounds much louder to me than it sounds on recordings (perhaps because my ears are "closer" to the treble end of the box). In the recordings the bass, which is rather "coarse" on this old box, tends to dominate the sound more than I would like.

Does anyone have suggestions for the best way to set up the recording - at the minute I just record to my camcorder & then load it to imovie on my Mac?

Had another go on my GC Merlin & managed to slow it down a bit!  Hopefully it sounds a bit more coherent now ...

(I had problems uploading to Youtube & had to use the lowest quality setting in order to get it to load)

Well it's not that much slower but it is certainly more coherent. Anyway I like that tempo, it drives along nicely. It gets my vote.

There is only one problem, you forgot to take off the shorts, but at least you changed the camera angle, I suppose we have that to be thankful for.

Cheers, Ian

Well, in my defense, it's been scorching here!  Tried to minimize the exposure though ...  8)

A fiendish little tune written this evening, after stubbing my left big toe rather badly whilst falling up the back step (smooth, I know...). A mixture of 5/4 and 7/4 - dots below. Note to self, don't write tunes you can't really play...

Hello all. I've been writing tunes for a while now, and at least some of them seem to go down well with our band and people who dance to us. With a measure of nervousness, I thought it's time I shared a couple with the wider melodeon community. Partly because, if someone out there likes and plays them, that would be great - and partly to test the waters for putting a collection together. So here's a recent and an older one. Sorry for this being in dots format - I may try to work out how you do recordings and post them, but I don't currently know how.

Jacaranda eh - very exotic.  :)  Brings me to mind of pirates having a little banyan on a beach, under the trees.  :)

I wrote a tune, but made it more complicated than I could play when I wrote it.  :)  Recently got into a Twitter conversation with syale about the Navy - I'd called my tune Pot Mess as it was a bit hornpipey and my Dad was in the Royal Navy.

Pot Mess is a staple Navy "scran".  It's basically what you eat at action stations; whatever they had lying around that could be boiled in a pot constantly.  The resulting sludge would be put into pots and taken up to whoever needed some food, at their station.  Great camping food.  :)

Suggested Recipe (although, in reality, it's "find whatever needs eating up, boil to destruction, serve, enjoy"):
http://www.rnsubs.co.uk/Dits/Recipes/pusserspotmess.php

So yes, I called my tune Pot Mess as I grew up in a Navy family, complete with its own language (banyan = impromptu beach party, scran = food, dits = tall tales, etc. etc.), it sounds a bit sailory, and it's basically that I threw a lot of notes and chords together based on other tunes that I liked (derivative o'clock) and the resultant mess is not bad if you're desperate.  :D

I haven't got a video of me playing it, but attached ABC if you want to have a go yourselves.

tallship will be along in a moment in his ABC policemen's hat to tell you the bar lengths aren't as stated in the M: header. I'd suggest fixing it by removing the even numbered barlines.

Speed? Would work as a French-style schottische perhaps?
Looks nice - I'm only looking at the dots (at work...), and already bits of it are getting stuck in my brain.

Bar lines?  I just put it in my phone and it plays it.  Me no understand.

As far as speed, I'd just describe it as "jaunty" but I'm sure other interpretations will be just as good.  :)

I'm in awe at some of these compositions - so much talent.   I find the whole process draining, and I’d like to do more of it. But your efforts mean that I might haunt this page for quite a while.

We'll have to do a CD.  Original Melnet compositions.  I might have to get a ghost squeezer to play mine for me though.
