Not a melodeon despite the name
« on: August 11, 2012, 09:53:59 AM »

Not a melodeon despite the name (All in the Spelling I guess) . this is actually a very nice sounding 1 voice instrument (70s/80s sample) , Got it cheap on E-Bay a while back as the mouthpiece/tube are missing, i`d like to get both and give the Balloon idea a go. Have had no luck in finding parts for Suzuki melodicas, only Hohner .

Not an instrument I`ve seen mentioned much despite being free reed, common and easy to play. I guess the image of the 70s green and red School hohner melodicas may have dented their appeal somewhat. Sounds rather concertina-like , Mellow & smooth with bags of volume and lots of control

Everything's on youtube. It was at a concert of L'Orchestre d'Hommes-Orchestres with the New Cackle Sisters performing Tom Waits songs. There's a video of "I'll shoot the moon" on youtube with the balloon-melodica at around 1:30. Warning: disturbing content  ;)

"Warning: disturbing content "
What bit did you find disturbing, the guy taking a swig from the gas can, or the girls with balloons? ;)

I got the big "punchball" balloons and got the whole of Ave maria (well the song version) out of one . there isn`t enough pressure to play chords but dual notes are fine and of course balloons being pressure constant means that the sound doesn`t fizzle out as it deflates .

I've never heard of this band before, absolutely brilliant, how can anyone continue to sing, without cracking-up, when someone is doing everything they can to put you off. What a fantastic show, and a pretty good rendition of TW.

Thanks for posting it, Simon.

Augustus Pablo was a big influence on early E2 (or Edward the Second and the Red Hot Polkas as they were known in those days).

Just a shame that they didn't play dub reggae as well as he did.  ;)

Great videos, but reminds me of many CBA videos, where I always find myself thinking, well OK, it can be done, but should it be done?

Do melodicas have reeds?

Do melodicas have reeds?

Yes indeed! I had one as a young teenager when Hohner first brought them out, they are a blow only, key operated, chromatic harmonica by any other name . . .

I had to tune this one, it was orignally tuned by Suzuki using red laquer paint which had come off some of the reeds ! . I used Nail varnish to re-tune it rather than filing as I wasn`t 100% sure what the reeds are made of and the brass look maybe an anodised finish to make them Goz-proof rather than the base metal (which I suspect is steel)
