I saw that, too. Based on the owner's account of what was stolen I can't imagine where they'd fence them in the country without being noticed.

I bet that they`ll be on the continent already . I can`t imagine anyone having over 1000 accordions - even accordion museums don`t seem to have that anywhere near that many, I pray for the guy`s sanity (especially after the robbery) .

ken is afriend of mine and he s well known in accordion circles worldwide and anyone who called with ken could nt help but be impressed not only by his vast collection of boxes but by his knowledge of boxes and he could play them as well to quite a standard and not only that and this may have been his undoing in this instance he was easy going and charming  but some rogues took advantage of a genuine gentleman who at times lately his health  has nt been so good  this is ahorrible crime to take away a man personnal collection of golas etc etc of which he was so proud yet never boasted about and if you were lucky enough to ever visit ken he would have let you sit and play any box in his vast collection but these rogues new what boxes to steal the chances are somebody here 0n this forum know the thieves i would appeal to you all to keep your ears to the ground and remember they also stole his motorhome and his jewellery my thoughts and best wishes are with ken :( :(

Is there an inventory or photos of what has been stolen??? People can't help too much if we don't know what to look out for... even us folk in places overseas can be vigilant... Let's hope for a good outcome.

While I'm moved to express sorrow for a fellow melodeonist, and  join in any ritual condemnation of this, my deeper feelings are actually more complex. I believe melodeons are for playing - I've have myself deliberately sold off excess kit at least twice. (I confess that 1st time the dosh was very useful).  1000 in one place? - not sure that's quite right in this moral framework. I should quickly add that I'm not the thief, nor do I in any way approve of the crime itself.

To be positive ... if post #5 is true, the loss was only 3% of the collection, though sounds like these guys knew what was worth taking.   I suspect this might make catching them easier. The melodeon world isn't all that big. :|glug

I believe from the Video and comments here that the high profile stolen items were PAs , melodeons weren`t mentioned though I bet he`s got a few rare shand morinos in there, if they`ve gone they`ll be immedietly identifiable. to be honest gold plated Gola and silver plated Scandalli PAs you`d think were pretty unique too. I`m amazed the motorhome hasn`t been picked up yet.

I understand your Moral framework post Chris, Though any crime like this is horrible invasion of a persons home and life and the sooner the culprits are caught the better.

I personally do not know any accordion thieves!! This chap has had his home broken into and his stuff has been stolen by criminals, who almost certainly would have no hesitation in using violence.
Moral framework??? Even if the bloke had 10 000 accordions, there is no moral argument to justify stealing from him. The moral issue I'm interested in is whether or not if caught the perpetrators will get some proper bird.

Details published on Facebook by the local Police:

Quote
Detectives from Ards CID are releasing images of very valuable and rare antique musical instruments similar to those stolen in a burglary in the hope that they can be recovered and returned to their owner. While the crime took place in Newtownards detectives believe the instruments could be anywhere, and are making a wider appeal to the public asking for help.Thirty accordions worth a considerable amount of money and dating back to the 1950s were taken from a house in the village of Comber on Monday August 6. The owner had been visited on August 4 by two men who said they wanted to buy an accordion for a relative. They asked to meet the man in west Belfast the following Monday to discuss the deal further. The man waited but the two others did not. When he returned to his home, he discovered that his six-berth motor home and all of his accordions had gone, along with assorted items of jewellery that have a great sentimental value. The motor home is a white 6-berth, Fiat Ducato, registration number W91 PVM. Detectives believe there is the possibility that the motor home could have left Northern Ireland. A spokesperson for Newtownards CID said:“These items are rare, and specialist. They are not the sort of thing you would normally see in a pawn shop or being offered for sale door to door or even on web sites. You would not pay a couple of hundred pounds for an instrument like this and anyone who wanted one knows what they are looking for and knows a reputable seller,”“We would appeal to anyone who has information on the whereabouts of these instruments, or is offered something simlar for sale in suspicious circumstances, to contact the Police Service of Northern Ireland on 0845 600 8000. Or if someone wants to pass information about this crime without giving their details, they can contact the independent Charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Must admit though, to my untrained eye, it seems like they've stolen the shiniest ones.  Gold and silver plated?  But they've left others that people on here have thought desirable.  Sounds more like opportunists to me.  They know what they *think* will sell abroad.  Whatever, as has been said, the target market is small and tightly knit so someone will see something unusual eventually.

I don't know Ken, but I feel that I do as so many of my friends talk about his famous collection.
We need a list (and photo's) of the instruments that have been taken.
The motor home should have turned up by now. I will keep an eye out down here in the South for any of the stuff.
