Could Steve please explain how the Ouse Washes cope with the low B >> B,4 >> ? My D/G Erica with accidentals doesn't have one - is this yet another excuse for getting a new melodeon before the end of the month?  ;)

I normally play this as a C part to Peat Fire Flame back to back with Woodland Revels. Have not yet played it for Morris.

Usual sketch approach, almost a miniature.

All the best from Suffolk.

I suspect Steve has a 4th button start box but on a 3rd button start you could use the B bass to play this note.

In Ouse Washes, Nicky Stockman's big three row Castagnari will certainly have that note. I expect Steve's box has it too.
That B is standard if you have either no accidentals or 4th button start.
As Lester says (and others have discovered elsewhere) the B bass comes in handy if you don't have it on the treble side.

Need you ask?  ;)

It should also be possible to transpose the whole tune up a fourth and play it in A Dorian instead or E Dorian. Note there isn't a C natural anywhere, so the transposed version wouldn't even need an F natural. You'd have to compromise on the A minor chords a bit. A bass + C chord, or cut thirds if you have a stop for it (not on an Erica...)

Thanks Lester & Anahata, using the bass B is a very good idea. As I gain a bit more confidence, I find that I'm enjoying tackling the technical oddities that the box throws up.
Sadly I don't have funds for a new box at the moment, however I have a Club IIB in for tuning with Martyn, so this theoretically should provide the answer to everything, albeit with further interesting challenges ahead.
Thanks for splendid advice.

On a 1 row in C you can try playing it in D Dorian.  No sharps or Flats are required and it fits fine.  Here's some transposed ABC for the version from the Ouse Washes Molly Dancers.

You will have to play it in the top octave of your one row as the A,4 is not available in the lower octave so
First bar goes thusly:

8th Push
8th Push
7th Pull
7th Pull

PS.
This may be the first minor (dorian) tune you have tried so it will be a bit odd as it is played more on the pull than on the push and the basses will not fit .

I have,nt got round to learning ABC yet.

I had forgotten that, as Lester says, the lowest A is not available on the typical 1 row melodeon in C whereas it is available on the ten button C row of some two rows, such as the B/C.  In general, however, if you look at the layout image for the 1 row in C on this site - http://forum.melodeon.net/files/site/Conerow.gif - a crude but handy rule of thumb for locating the notes given in ABC transcriptions is that the capital letters are for notes towards the left in the image and the lowercase letters are for notes towards the right.  That might be enough to get you going.  ABC is, however, easy to learn and will repay the effort involved many times over.

Thanks Lester and Flatnote, I've got it now. I guess that one has to compromise with just one row, but its lost its vague air of menace being played so high up.......

I have a one row Cajun style and there is an A on the first button. Maybe it's just my box that the previous owner changed. Anyway, for me it fits fine on the lower octave. Also, I used Melody Assistant to transpose it to F (where the B notes are marked natural) which I now discover looks like the same as the Dorian D. I'm amazed -- every day it's something different.

I have a Hohner Morgane which seems like it was made to play this - will learn the tune and post.  I like a shanty.  :D

Decided to submit early this month despite the all too evident flaws.  I sidestepped Lester's 'dodgy B part' issue by merging the version I had heard before with the marvellous version by the Ouse Washes Molly Dancers.  Since their part B was my part A, the dodgy bit is now part C!

Here's the "Original" Morris On recording, although with a rather unexpected film background!

Sorry for the late reply - have been down in the wilds of Suffolk for the Traditional Music Day in Stowmarket and my twice-annual visit to the Suffolk coast to check that the North Sea is still there (it is :Ph ).

Yes - as Lester and Anahata have already surmised, my Ouse Washes box is a 4th button start and therefore I have a low B as my 2nd button push on the G-row. Also as they have mentioned, if you don't have low B, you can always play that note as a B bass on the LH side. The momentary switching of the melody from right to left sides might sound a bit odd to the player, but is hardly noticeable to any listeners.
