Has anyone else noticed that whenever a video is made of a morris side, the mic is pointed away from the musicians?  Must still be doing something wrong...  Seems it's preferable to hear the audience discuss what to have for lunch than hear the music.

Rob.
The mic usually points in the same direction as the lens of course. Plus, the audience chatter or else the sound of the sticking causes the camera's sound auto level to lose the music too. I can't think of any amateur morris video I've seen where the soundtrack does the music justice! Grrr.

Indeed - standing right behind the box player certainly helps! Back to the topic, am I right in thinking that Saul Rose's piece 'Tom o Vickers' (on the Mother of All Morris) album is based on Go Enlist?

I was just thinking that about ten minutes ago !

Here's a quick go with an experimental Am intro...

I just started to learn this one today, played on my newly acquired Beltuna one row in D   thanks Brandon
playing in Edor I think I have the A part pretty good but the B part needs work. I don't really like the way it slows down in the version posted above or maybe if I could play it better I might.
nice tune though!
I'll keep working on it and try to post another.

GO & LIST FOR A SAILOR (1) as posted earlier today
http://youtu.be/VUIo31879fA  (Ouse Wash Molly tune)

GO & LIST FOR A SAILOR (2)   in two keys.   http://youtu.be/TvPHiDHsXcY

The first one is trying for some of the off-beats rhythm of  that great Molly video, plus trying to give different character to the A and B.

The second one is a quick  try-out of the idea of playing the A music in "Eminor" and the B music in "A minor"  (This is DG-speak. On my CF it really comes out in Dm and Gm).
When playing it all in the same key, it felt like there were two tunes here rather than a proper A and B of the same tune. (I think i read that the  B music is like a fiddle interlude between verses of the song.)  Clive's version made a nice separation by playing the B music an octave higher, i seem to remember.   Sandy's  A minor introduction gave me the idea of giving each part its own key.  I quite like it that way.  (There are plenty of tunes with A and B in different keys, after all).  Maybe better if the B was the higher, like a fiddle.

It's only really played like that for morris dancing Michael, you wouldn't play the 'slows' in a session (unless the session was apres morris!) . Watch this video, it will make more sense of the slow bits.

Here's the "Original" Morris On recording, although with a rather unexpected film background!

Have to say I love this recording.

You see this is one of the great things about MEL Net, it's like wandering into a sweet shop..

This vid of The Hammersmith Morris Men is briliant, I've watched now at least 4 times - thanks for posting Ollie.... but what is the tune he is playing (and I wonder if that box is now on sale in Hobgoblin in London - big yellow Hohner)?

I may have to try and get into a morris side now I think...

The usual tune for Adderbury Shooting.

And that box is an early and somewhat customised Oakwood. There is absolutely no chance whatsoever of it or anything like it ever being on sale anywhere. (except in unthinkable circumstances)

Have to say I love this recording.

"Morris on" came out in about 1972 or 73, and probably got more people interested in English Dance music and Cotswold Morris (and the other Morris's as well), than any other single event in the last 40 years. That is a completely unsubstantiable statement, but could well be true! It was for me... :M  :||: :Ph :|glug

Um... so these Oakwood boxes are obtainable under what circumstances?  :P
They are no longer made. Very rarely, one comes up second-hand, but most people lucky enough to have one are holding on to them.
The nearest equivalent instruments are the Dino Baffetti Oakwood specials marketed by the Music Room:

Thanks Pete
I see what you mean but then what would I do for a B part in the Edor version instead of the slows ? maybe I just play A part again :-\.
I could try to learn the Emin version but I don't have the low B ( I am working on changing this) I would need. I suppose I could play it on the upper octave.

Thanks Sandy. I really like your rhythm and all those tiny silences in the right places.  It just shows how push-pull can achieve that  certain special quality that cross-rowing never can.  Jealous.....again!

I do love it when a good player demonstrates that the (Hohner) melodeon is capable of great musical subtlety.
