Nice............ and was that a smile at the end? ;)

Wind I think. Lester isn't given to bouts of good humour in my experience.  ;)

Just to congratulate Lester on his marathon effort this month.  What started out as 'First of a few' barrelled into a great collection of tunes - and I'm still working through them.  Thanks Lester (:) , and it begs the question - what will you do for next month?  Apart from shut that bloomin' drawer ;).

Ah, yes - I had not realised there was an Introduction tab on your Tune-a-Day...great idea, looking forward to the next year's worth (:).  And the photos of your melodeons are excellent - really crisp and clear (I must have the bug badly to be drooling over good melodeon photos :o).

End of the month folks! Time to move onto another theme; as ever late additions always welcome - just tag them on here.

I was going to post this for Theme of the month, but too busy at the time, so here it is now, better late than never. Also because of the discussion of this tune in another thread.

The Sussex Cotillion. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ijCAbf2noY

It's a wonderful, statuesque kind of tune that has taken my fancy lately, and no doubt we'll play it at the first First Sunday Session at the Gun & Spitroast at Horsmonden on Sunday evening.

Sussex is in England, but we also know that it's close to France, the country from which we got the cotillion in the first place. I guess the point I'm making is that I think there's good reason to be a little skeptical when people say a particular tune 'belongs' to a people or a place - because in reality so many are shared, as you'd expect with a commodity that gets shared and passed along

For example, we English think Buttered Pease comes from Yorkshire, but the Scots think it's theirs, as it's used as a pipe tune...

The Welsh claim it too, and say the name is a corruption of Pwt-ar-y-Bys.

I though everyone knew it was a Northumbrian smallpipe tune. ::)

On the basis that God created Yorkshire first, it's a Yorkshire tune!

Still squeezing after all these years.
Mostly on hohners , with a couple of Dinos and a smattering of anglos - and now a Jeffries duet

Anahata -

The Scotsman who told me it was a pipe tune, also told me it is usually one of the first tunes a new piper learns, and that the Scottish Gaelic title translates as 'I Fart Upon your Finger'.

Lord knows whether the last bit is true, but it struck me as quaint at least. I pressed him as much as I dared short of actually being rude, and he seemed pretty sure.

If it is true, my guess is that an English name may have been converted into a Gaelic one with a similar sound, but which happens to make no sense.

Have been practising Morris tunes so while I had the camera out for TOTM... this is the tune (Ring O'Bells) to my favourite dance so far - Stop Me and Buy One - and I have recently found out that the dance was written by Lester!  Thank you Lester, it's such a great dance - so exciting to watch, and I am still trying to get to grips with the 'dodgy chorus', hoping that at least everyone else knows which sticks they're supposed to be keeping and throwing (:).

City of Auckland - I'm more at the 'preschool' stage, with occasional forays out in public.  Started going to practice as learning the melodeon, but tried dancing and was hooked, and they let me in!
Thank you for the link (:), I shall have to keep watching your Aldbury video to help me with the sticking - to avoid those moments when you have 2 sticks and find another one heading in your direction :o.
