Hohner 3-Row
« on: September 10, 2012, 02:22:06 AM »

Today was my lucky day. I found a Hohner 3-Row in the keys of G,C,and F at a price that did not break the bank.

The bellows does not leak. A couple of the bass buttons are chipped, but that is only a cosmetic problem. Only a couple of different notes are going to need some minor work.

Overall it is a beautiful box that has no odor of mold or mildew. There are no reed plates rattling around inside.

The finish is dark woodgrain with the Hohner logo in red letters. The grill is not tarnished.

I just printed out the layout from elsewhere on this site so I can figure out the best way to play it.

It's not a Steierische Harmonika but it should be great for Mexican music.

This box has 16 basses rather than the 12 shown on the 31 button G/C/F (Hohner Corona Style Layout)

I did find a picture of what appears to be the same model accordion on the internet. It is on Flickr. This is the address that came up for the picture. I have no idea if this will work....

Very nice indeed, like a Pre-Corona but with 16 basses .

theo has a 12 basser for sale

I had a lot of fun playing around with my new accordion for over an hour last night.

Three rows give more possibilities for borrowing notes from other rows without changing bellows direction.

This box is quite a bit heavier than my one and two row melodeons.

I was playing along with some of my Mexican Norteno records, ignoring the bass side. I can understand why it is common to remove the bass reed blocks to make the box lighter in weight.

Just when I have finally learned to play with 4 fingers on the four rows of bass/chords, and can nearly handle 12 bass (in 2 rows), then THIS comes along.

Wow. How can you play the lowest rows plus the air button?

Instead of an air button, this accordion has an air bar on the left side, across the length of the bass button board.

I have to be careful not to activate the bar with the palm of my hand whilst playing the bass buttons.

Is that cool or what?  Could we see a picture?  How long is it?

There are pics of an old 16 bass 3 row Hohner here:  Helmut Wurzer Accordion Collection.  That's one honkin' big bar - its width covers almost the entire bass end.

I have no way to post pictures.

I have another much older 3-row accordion in very poor condition. It also has an air bar. It appears to be a Hohner product but someone painted it black at one time in its history, covering whatever decal or paint may have given a clue to its manufacturer.

The long air bar was standard issue on many Hohner 3 rows of that era, and even some 2 rows. Some of the details on the 1920's Hohners, like the air bar, and metal corners are are also seen on models marked Supertone . My 20's three row has this air bar, and once accustomed to it, I think it is a wonderful design. It also is linked on each end to two separate pallets, so you can take on or release lots of air quickly.
