Way back in 1973/4 I had the pleasure of seeing both Stephane Grappelli ("just there" playing 5 feet in from of me in beer tent at Cambridge FF!) :|glug and Yehudi Menuhin (hon fellow of my college) close up.  It was a very "good" year  :D

Nothing to do with me: but I next saw these maestros they were together, on the BBC. They performed an eclectic mix of music.  The interesting point for me was that Grappelli was pretty damn good on classical.

I could recall Menuhin breaking a string in mid cadenza in the concert he'd done for us .. he'd just carried on :o  But when it came to "swing" the good Baron visibly struggled!  Basically I concur with Marge - swing and syncopation are hard to teach - you have to "use the Force"  8)  And it is part of English folk - Nic Jones in the 70's swung all over the place, as Mary Humphries does now.

Nice syncopated mazurka .. "La Guinguette"

 8) a classic! Here's a more recent mazurka  http://chrisryall.net/music/feline.wma (with permission) from the same source. The title track of Pignol's album FĂ©line - available from http://boutique.mustradem.com
