New tune: what bass with F natural?
« on: July 17, 2011, 09:30:28 PM »

Hi All,
I've been looking at one of Bernard Loffet's lovely French tunes. Yep, me a dyed-in-the-wool English player going French :Ph
It's the approaching holiday over the channel that's got me going .....
Anyway:
The tune, 'Valse a Mary' is written in the key of C, with all the F's sharpened to F#, so far it fits on my D/G, and has an unusual sound to it that I like.
The first part of the 'b' music reverts to a bar with natural F's:  "   Fnat,E - Fnat,A - G,E.  "
The notation gives this bar with an F bass/chord, which on my D/G I don't have.
My F natual is on the pull......
I have been messing with C bass and chord, though it's early days and it somehow doesn't sound good.
Any other ideas out there?
cheers

D bass would give you a nice D minor.

written in the key of C,

Do you mean the key signatature has no sharps or flats?  If that is the case its not nesessarily in the key of C major,  it  sounds as if its it might be based in A minor which has no sharps or flats, with shifts into A dorian which has F#s.  So although C the chord may come into it, tit's possibly not the home chord.

It's lovely tune. A few years ago I transposed it into E minor to render it D/G box friendly.

D bass would give you a nice D minor.

Yes, that's what I use if I'm playing on a box without an F natural bass, and even use it sometimes even when the F bass is available. That's the D bass on the pull, of course.

That's the D bass on the pull, of course.

Kind of depend on which direction your F treble note is, normally on the push on Hohners

If your F is on the pull  ::) then A and C bass notes will complete the Fmaj chord.

Ahhh... because there were no sharps or flats, I thought I was playing in C, as you suggest Theo.
Embarrassing lack of musical knowledge folks  :|bl

Thank you Steve, will convert to dots and have a look, thanks for the other thoughts too.
Lester - my F nat is a pull.

I thought I was just going to play a 'nice simple French waltz', which of course it is.
As per normal, everything takes me to another learning opportunity, playing in a different -to me unusual - key, with a new accidental thrown in.
I'm still on the near vertical learning curve!
thanks to all for combined knowledge.
After  :M tonight, must try and carve out some practise time in between packing!
cheers
