Keep in mind Theo's comment that most Clubs are old and will need money spent on them.  But if Club is the style of box that works for you, the money is well spent.

Yeah, I hear that. Ultimately though, from what I've seen here, it'll cost me less than a new Pokerwork, and probably less than a decent used Pokerwork too, even with a reed refurbishment. I don't really know for sure whether Club is what will work for me. I know I'm not likely to be playing sessions, and certainly not Morris, and that what I want is a melodeon which will adapt nicely to all sorts of music, in a reasonable range of keys. Club seems most likely for that. If I love playing, I'm sure I'll find room in my home for a D/G, and a B/C, and a cajun one-row, and, and.......

Exactly!

A well restored Club is the low cost cost way to get the flexibility of a 2.5 row.  It won't have the refinement of a Castagnari Mori or equivalent, but the sound has a charm and character all of its own.

Prospects for me owning an Italian box are VERY slim, without a major change of earning power! Even then, I suspect a handbuilt guitar would remain higher on my list. Who knows though?

I've long admired the Preciosa, but also long wondered how in the world someone would tune it with the reeds mounted flat to the soundboard like that.  Isn't one voice covered by the other, and if you tune it with only the bottom voice installed, then tune the top voice, wouldn't the first-voice reeds behave differently when the second-voice reeds change the airspace around them??

Ah, but you have to look at the potential.
Good on you.  Make it happen!  the world needs more of these.

So is this the one you bought, or the one demonstrating that such bargains are to be found?  If you bought the thing, let us know how it works out, and have fun!

That's really well done Sam, what a bargain. Welcome to the wacky world of melodeon owning/playing. You might want to join in this thread and tell us of your experiences bringing the box up to full playing condition.  ;D

There is always this one:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Hohner-Club-II-Melodeon_W0QQitemZ120331947833QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_MusicalInstr_Keyboard_RL?hash=item120331947833&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2|65%3A1|39%3A1|240%3A1318

SHUSH!!!!! I'm watching that one!  8)

Don't worry on my account - that's me out of the hunt! I'm glad to continue to support my reputation as a bit of an eBay shark. If I'm lucky, it'll be somewhere near playable, and I'll be able to have some fun whilst I save up for a refurb.....

Except for the tools! I did think about that, but then I looked at all my half-finished bike projects, and the vintage bus restoration that's not moving fast enough, and thought "better not add to that!". I'd love to learn to do it one day, but today, with 3 jobs, a new baby, etc etc, is not the time.

Fantastic!  Congratulations...  :)

I was wondering about this myself, maybe a topic for another thread.  With all the musical noise-making going on, how do you fit music practice around the baby sleeping?  I've been worried about this, sort of in a preemptive way, because since a child I've always lived in a noisy musical home.  Couldn't imagine having to leave the house to practice.
