Also The Tex Mex / Norteno crowd seem to prefer 2 voice boxes whereas the Vallenetos 3 voice - they all seem to thrive on Coronas and Gabbannellis

Italy

du botte -  1.5 row two bass instrument like single row with half row of reversals.

Mike, do you know anything about the origin/meaning of this name?

------------------------------------
Source and definition for 'du botte':

"Due Bassi (una fila + tre vocette interne) E il modello piu semplice e suona solo in una tonalita. Nella practica tradizionale lo si trova soprattutto in Calabria ed in Abruzzo, dove viene chiamato 'du botte'."

L'Organetto Diatonico, Roberto Tombesi and Riccardo Tesi,  Berben (Ancona), 1993.

------------------------------------
Usage in common parlance:
------------------------------------

e.g.: "Una bellissima gara tra du botte."

Yorkshire terms for a melodeon:

Box  - any type of melodeon

Posh box - any melodeon that isn't a Hohner

Brown box - Stewart Gidden's Saltarelle thing ('cos it's brown)

Box - the box that you put the box in when not playing it

Bag - in case you havent got a box for your box

Bag - the money collected from busking or dancing with your box

Box - the house where you keep your boxes when they aren't out in the box or the bag

Suggest

Modes  Playing a tune on a diatonic scale (or melodeon row) starting on a note other than its 1st eg on a "C" row: the CDEFGABC scale has modes 2=DEFGABCD "dorian minor", 5=GABCDEFG "mixolydian" and 6=ABCDEFGA "relative/natural minor". Others are rare in western music, but mode 3 EFGABCDE "phrygian" is common east of the Danube. *Modes are called "positions" in mouth organ play

*could someone please confirm
** http://chrisryall.net/modes availabe as onward link?
***We could add: Care is advised  in Yorkshire where "playing in Modes" might refer to gigging at a Bradford night club  ;D

[edit] Thanks Pikey. Considered the lawn one m'self ... but then google found the night club  :|glug

PS liked your explanation of modes.

My other melodeon's a fiddle, but one of my Hohners has six strings! I also play a very red Hawkins Bazaar in C and a generic Klingenthaler spoon bass in F.!! My other pets (played) are gobirons - Hohner Marine Band in C, Hohner Tremolo in D and a Chinese Thingy Tremolo in G.
