Looking for "Lunch at the Pub"
« on: October 21, 2012, 02:14:38 PM »

Recently I heard a lovely tune that the player told me was called "Lunch at the Pub" I would love to learn it however I can't find it on ABC nor can I find it played on the internet anywhere.

Have I got the name slightly wrong or can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thank you x

I found 'Lunch at the Pub' here: http://www.peterloud.co.uk/tunebook/ in a tune book by Peter Loud (not a bad price for a large collection) . Still looking for the ABC.

There is something similar in an ABC file at http://www.freewebs.com/folkbluesnbeyond/WIP.ABC called Banbury Bill alternative.

That's all folks!

I have Peter Loud's book as well - an excellent resource. However he credits Andy Cutting with writing 'Lunch at the pub'. It was actually written by Pete Lockwood of the Cock & Bull band and is on their album 'Concrete routes sacred cows'.

Ah, we in the folk world, who knows where these tunes come from. I remember Eliza Carthy crediting "The Sweetness of Mary" to "trad.arr". How wrong can you be?

You mean he didn't write all those tunes credited to him, and he's been collecting royalties for all these years? Shame on him!  :|glug

My other melodeon's a fiddle, but one of my Hohners has six strings! I also play a very red Hawkins Bazaar in C and a generic Klingenthaler spoon bass in F.!! My other pets (played) are gobirons - Hohner Marine Band in C, Hohner Tremolo in D and a Chinese Thingy Tremolo in G.

Thanks for the info. on the attribution of Lunch at the Pub.  This leaves me in a difficult position. Can a third, independent, person confirm the writer?

I will endeavour to correct the entry in the book, but it is quite a big problem to make the correction and will take a while to work through.

Yes, absolutely, it's written by Pete Lockwood of the Cock and Bull band. A very popular session tune around Milton Keynes, but even here it's (wrongly) attributed to 'trad' occasionally.

Cheers,

Clive

"Yes, absolutely, it's written by Pete Lockwood . . . .".

OK, I take that as definite.  My apologies to Pete Lockwood.  It is ironic that I live in Milton Keynes and got that wrong  :( , and no-one pointed it out earlier.

I shall see if I can make the change to the book.  It will be doubly difficult, I even have  section,"Tunes from around Milton Keynes".

I was told Andy Cutting a few years ago by a very good melodeon player who lives not so far from MK.

Does your book include Brian Creer's Shipwrecked in Milton Keynes?

Ah good to see you on this site Peter. I would like to take this opportunity to thoroughly recommend your book and apologise for throwing a spanner in the works. It must be nigh on impossible to attribute everything with absolute certainty.

No,  The complete list of the tunes in my book is on the website.
http://www.peterloud.co.uk/tunebook/

Please don't think that I am trying to push my book. I am almost out of stock and going overseas for 3 months so I am in a poor position to supply books until March.

Addendum 30th Oct.
I have updated the book started printing a few for when I'm away this winter.

Here we go courting controversy - this tune, popular a few years ago, seems to have resurfaced more recently with an over - simplified B part. I offer the following as a by no means perfect but more authentic version of Pete Lockwood's original, which of course can be heard on the album mentioned earlier in this thread.
