Wonderous Sonority
« on: October 23, 2012, 12:01:46 PM »

Microbot has recently fettled me a Hohner 1040 in A, and I am so taken by its wonderous sonority thst I've asked him to find me one in G. This is fine as I only play by myself, but if I was ever courageous enough to attend a session would I blend in?  I hope this is'nt too obviously silly but I have little experience.....

Your A box might be a bit of a struggle in sessions, where D and G are predominant.  A one-row G box would fit in nicely, particularly as it is an octave below a D/G and will add some extra roundness to the tone.  Similarly, Rees is often to be seen in sessions armed with one of his own four-stops (although I believe he usually carries one in D).

Sometimes D, sometimes C, sometimes both. I don't think I've ever felt wicked enough to take the B flat to an English session.  ;)

To play with anyone except D/G Box Only Players!  >:E (Many fiddle tunes are in A, by the way. So this may account for an "A" box).

My other melodeon's a fiddle, but one of my Hohners has six strings! I also play a very red Hawkins Bazaar in C and a generic Klingenthaler spoon bass in F.!! My other pets (played) are gobirons - Hohner Marine Band in C, Hohner Tremolo in D and a Chinese Thingy Tremolo in G.

You could start up a collection ... like harmonica players.  I saw James Cotton once with a whole briefcase full of harmonicas.

I could never understand why anyone would want more than one melodeon Gary, then I joined Melnet....I now have 1040's inA and D and one in G on its way, not to mention a Chinese toy in with Hohner insides in C. All since late Septenber....is M.A.D a notifiable disease on your side of the pond?

It hasn't made it into the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) yet, but I have hopes for the fifth edition.  As it is, there may be 12 step groups starting.  Their motto is, "Squeeze harder!"
