Penguin Book of English Folk Songs
« on: November 12, 2012, 07:08:45 PM »

Does this book have music in it also or is it just the song lyrics?

The British Amazon website shows some images, eg:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/customer-media/product-gallery/0141194618/ref=cm_ciu_pdp_images_3?ie=UTF8&index=3&isremote=0
It seems that there is standard notation, but no chords or tabs. This is for the new book, which is a completely new selection of songs.

I have ordered a copy of the reprint 1961 copy from the 1959 version from Alibris.

Thanks for the info...

I've got the 1968 re-print, and it has the melody line.

The New Penguin Book of English Folk Songs is well worth getting hold of if you're into that sort of thing. Lots of different versions of well known songs, in a beautiful hardback book, with some wonderful illustrations.

I already have the old version - is is worth getting the new one as well? I have a good collection of songbooks and am always looking out for more. I don't want to waste mony (or Santa's money?) buying the new one if there's a lot of duplication.

No duplication at all, as far as I can see - and worth buying for the introduction and footnotes alone!

Right, thank you, Davy, that's going on my Xmas list. I also have a birthday that's inconveniently close to Xmas (what were my parents thinking of?) so I need to have some present suggestions.

Absolutely. The 2012 New Penguin Book of English Folk Songs by Steve Roud and Julia Bishop is probably going to be a classic. There's a good introduction, 151 songs, notes on every song, a bibliography, discography and index. Happily for many users of this forum, every song has a tune, and every tune is transcribed into either one or two sharps  ---  so they'll go straight onto D/G melodeons.

The original Penguin Book of English Folk Songs was re-published as Classic English Folk Songs about 8-9 years ago. It was revised by the late Malcolm Douglas who corrected and added a lot to the original notes on the songs.
It has the melodies and words as in the originals.
I have bought the original Penguin years ago, but still felt it was worth buying Malcom's revised version as well.

Me too - I quickly developed a pathological hatred of so-called "combined Xmas and birthday presents".  ::)

I thought it turned to thoughts of new melodeons?  ;D

Maybe we need a new thread - the english book of penguin songs about melodeons?

All together now.....

'And the larks they played melodeons, at the dawning of the day'......   >:E

'..and Jim Sharpe he played melodeons....'  ;)

Yep, that's the version I've heard in folk clubs, it really, really irritates some singers when they start off with the  proper version  and everyone else sings daft versions of the chorus. Maybe that's why you hear the song sung so rarely these days?

Also 'the sharks they stank malodorous, at the bottom of the bay' seems to be a favourite.

How apt. My parents were indeed married in the previous April ...
