1. what is your favourite style e.g. morris, Irish, English, Cajun, Australian, French, Scottish, song,  Canadian, Texmex, Yiddish, etc

English

2. what other styles do you play regularly

Irish, French, American, Scandinavian, Scottish etc - but this refers to tunes rather than authenticity of style

3. how many boxes do you own now

Four

4. how many boxes have you owned in your lifetime

Five

5. if you've let go of some boxes, why?

Too heavy, already got two D/G and didn't need another

6. what keys are they in (e.g 3 in G/D, one in A/D)

G/D x 2, C/F, G

7. what make are they  (eg 3 Hohners, 1 Castagnari)

Salterelle, Hohner x 2, Castagnari

8. do you tend to play alone or with others

Both

9. what has been your journey? eg have you always stuck to the same group, same side, same genre or expanded into other fields, returned back to roots and so on

Started playing solo and in sessions, joined a ceilidh band (the Electropathics) until they folded, back to playing solo and sessions, joined another ceilidh band (Albireo) with whom I still play.  Also still playing sessions.

10. have you ever taught someone else

Yes

12. have you ever opened up the box to see what's inside

Yes

13. do you do your own minor repairs

Occasionally, but this may change after a morning spent with Bernard Loffet

14. how many other instruments do you play and what are they

Guitar, anglo concertina, hammered dulcimer, recorder, bones, singing.  Have played mandolin and Appalachian dulcimer

15. how old are you now  (teens, 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s. 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, less than 11, more than 99!)

50s

16. which is more fun : playing box or listening

Playing

17. If you could play in a session with just one player (alive or dead), who would it be?

Hard to answer - I have played in sessions with many of the players I admire the most.  If pushed - Oscar Woods, whom I saw play only once, so another chance would be wonderful

18. have you ever been to a melodeon gathering? if so , which one? (eg Witney, Whitby, ECMW)

Not one which was exclusively melodeons. But I've been to plenty of festivals and other gatherings with plenty of melodeons

19. do you think that Squeezy, Theo and Clive should be knighted for their services to melodeon playing?

Goes without saying

20. have you had enough of answering questions?

There are more?

1. what is your favourite style e.g. morris, Irish, English, Cajun, Australian, French, Scottish, song,  Canadian, Texmex, Yiddish, etc
The more I play and listen to, the harder it I find it to pinpoint certain styles. Let's just say I like waltzes/mazurkas least, whatever the origin.

2. what other styles do you play regularly
Currently none

3. how many boxes do you own now
4 in working order, 3 in bits

4. how many boxes have you owned in your lifetime
7

5. if you've let go of some boxes, why?
I haven't yet.

6. what keys are they in (e.g 3 in G/D, one in A/D)
Assuming we're back onto boxes we currently have:
1: B/C
1: B/C/C#
1: C
1: D/G
1: A/D
1: G
1: C/F

7. what make are they  (eg 3 Hohners, 1 Castagnari)
1 Dino Baffetti, 3 Hohners, 1 Homka, 1 Herfield.

8. do you tend to play alone or with others
With others

9. what has been your journey? eg have you always stuck to the same group, same side, same genre or expanded into other fields, returned back to roots and so on
In an attempt to keep my answer as simple as possible: I tend to mix it up where possible.

10. have you ever taught someone else
I've given small pointers, but I'm not comfortable teaching.

12. have you ever opened up the box to see what's inside
Always!

13. do you do your own minor repairs
Whenever I can. Not that they all go according to plan

14. how many other instruments do you play and what are they
Flute, hurdy-gurdy, guitar. I suppose that makes 3.

15. how old are you now  (teens, 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s. 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, less than 11, more than 99!)
23

16. which is more fun : playing box or listening
Playing.

17. If you could play in a session with just one player (alive or dead), who would it be?
Picking just one name would be rather crude.

18. have you ever been to a melodeon gathering? if so , which one? (eg Witney, Whitby, ECMW)
No

19. do you think that Squeezy, Theo and Clive should be knighted for their services to melodeon playing?
I think a special awards ceremony should be held for highly valued musicians and repairmen. All winners are required to play some tunes.

20. have you had enough of answering questions?
Personally, I feel rather let down that this is it for now.

1. English
2. French
3. 1
4. 9 (eek - luckily most were s/h so did not financially loose out too much!) but no more than 3 at any one time.
5. A mixture of upgrading, then lost confidence & sold all boxes - that was a good few years ago and have only just started playing again. Going to keep to one box this time around, says he who has already made one change........
6. D/G, G/C & C/F
7. 3 Hohners, 2 Saltarelle, 2 Casatgnari, 1 Dino & 1 Jorgina
8. Closet - I now play to amuse myself as experience as taught me that, though I love music, actually I will never be very good at it.
9. First English - then discovered French - I have have always very much liked other music from jazz to early music but not to play.
10. no
11. why no question 11
12. yes
13. no
14. guitar + anglo concertina, in the past 40 odd years I have dabbled with whistles, flutes, banjo, bass, hammered dulcimers, dulcimers, fiddle, mandolin, djembe, midi, congas. None were played particularly well I hasten to add.
15. 50s
16. I do not think the two activities are exclusive.
17. Irrelevant, as I would be too embarrassed to play anything.
18. many years ago - not recently
19. and all the other leading melodeon players out there
20. I like questionnaires.

That is interesting.  That moment when we first hear a piece of music and think, "I have to play that.  Listening is not enough."

2. what other styles do you play regularly I try to play non-folk music too, and I think it's interesting that you've chosen just the above, which probably means you're thinking of the box as a folk instrument only?

4. how many boxes have you owned in your lifetime 7

5. if you've let go of some boxes, why? Replaced by better ones.

16. which is more fun : playing box or listening Playing, mostly.
