Fab Four: Freereeds
« on: July 05, 2021, 10:45:20 PM »

I put these together and liked the effect. The photos are real. The one of George playing the enormous chord harmonica was the trickiest to find. It's from the cover of Beat Instrumental, July 1967, and was taken during the recording of Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite.

Well, that's one more chord than a number of "Artists" knew!

Beatles songs would have sounded so different had they actually played those.  I was watching some of the Youtube snatches of them performing live and it was very noticeable how their sound changed when they started using the Casinos instead of the jangle of Rickenbacker and Gretsch.

I remember watching a performance with a four-stop in the band!  Was that you?  Is there a Youtube recording?  If so, link please!

I have to say the box ruled.

yep that was me...there's various vids on youtube...just search "brown eyed handsome man"....it was recorded on the jools holland show, national lottery show with lulu onboard, the tube, and top of the pops, and a gig we played live at the cavern. i used my acadian in C played in key of G. We recorded it at Abbey Road for the album Run Devil Run. yeh macca was a bit of a cajun fan...he booked us for his christmas party and for his daughters wedding and did some more recording at his own studio which is where he tried (and failed) to get a tune out of my one row LOL

While I was looking this up, I saw that you also recorded with Kate Bush, Chris! That must have been interesting, too. Although in the final mix the accordion is fairly minimalist. :(

Rob, I agree.  I think the Epiphone sound (especially the sound of their overwound P-90 pickups) is such a key ingredient.

Chris, that is truly cool.  Glad that story came up.  I didn't know Paul had a Cajun side.

This makes me wonder if the concertina photo is actually a clever fake.  It's the one I find the least plausible.

Not as implausible as this one, though!

Might have just been a publicity shot where they had a bunch of weird instruments and had the boys lark around with them.

John Lennon played the mouth organ quite a bit in the early years; I bet he would have taken to the melodeon.

I met a fellow who played English concertina on one of John's songs. He said after the session John asked him some questions about the instrument, liked the name (given that they were in New York City at the time), and didn't seem to be familiar with concertinas at all.

Contemporary image ? with associated shadows ? so probably genuine.  'Inexpensive', generic, German Box of the era......same principal as the melodeon to some extent for 'press' three buttons and get a chord'ish tone out it, so you wouldn't need to be a player per se.....
