Does anybody know how strict the tutors are about the type of instruments attending the classes - for instance if I want to take my concertina to the playing for step dancing / cajun classes which are advertised as being for melodeons, are people likely to object if I hide quietly at the back and don't ask concertina related questions?

Thanks

M&M is a really friendly gathering. I can't see anyone objecting to you attending as you describe. Just to be on the safe side, have a quiet word with the tutor just before the start of the workshop to explain what you propose to do.

Are there likely to be any Friday night sessions the night before the Melodeons day?

I don't know if it'll happen this yesr, but there was a tune-up last year on Friday night in the back room (former garage!) of the Royal William (probably the nicest pub in stowmarket).
Address is: 53 Union St East, Stowmarket IP14 1HP
phone: 01449 674553:   grid reference TM 049 589

If no session, it's worth visiting anyway   ;)

Why not email Katie Howson (OP) and ask her?

there been muttering about doing it. It was fun last time. I think the royal william is unique its like someone built a town around a village and its pub leaving it unscathed.

Thanks all.   I'll email Katie (oh why didn't I think of that?!) and will try the Royal William if she doesn't know of anything else.

Thanks again,

The pre-M&M informal session at the Royal William, which has taken place the past couple of years, was organised by a couple of Melnet members - Chas(aka Fidgit) & Jan.

So Katie will know little/nothing about it, and neither will the Royal William unless someone has already called and asked if it can take place again this year.

As nobody has piped up, I presume that call has yet to be made :)

I have put Chas on the task to organize with the Royal William since he is in UK and I am not.

News just in from Katie
Looks like a no, no this year.
Chas
I think the Royal William is out this year for a Friday night session. It has become a really busy pub in the last year or so, even the back room, which now has a full size pool table in  it, which is used regularly by a crowd of good customers on a Friday night.

Other nights of the week are much easier, but it's a struggle to find anywhere for a Friday night, especially with so many pubs doing food and several closing!

The landlord in the Mendlesham King's Head might be on for a session, but if you're staying in Stowmarket, that's not great really.

Phone number for the Mendlesham King's Head is 01449 766543 if you want to enquire.

Thanks Chas,

I'd be happy to drive to Mendlesham for a session on the Friday as I'd need to drive to Stowmarket anyway!

What do others think? Is it worth calling the Kings Head?

Anyone got the dots/ABC for the tune 'Garlands'?  I've left myself a bit short on time for learning the last two tunes, and don't know Haste to the Wedding or Garlands at all... It'd be quicker if I had the dots as a guide to my ear!  I can find dots for Haste to the Wedding easy enough, but can't find 'Garlands' at all (nice tune though!) is it known by another name??

Looking forward to it though! :-D

Any news on the Friday night session?  Husband and I will be up on Friday, probably sampling the delights of Stowmarket for the day.

YES!!!!!
I've just  called the Kings Head in Mendlesham and he's happy to have us.
It will inbe the room where there's a pool table so we may need to repel boarders, although he did say he'd cover it and its usually very quiet on a Friday.

I said 8pm onwards. I'm happy to give a couple of people (max 3) a lift from Stowmarket if needed.

Please post on the thread if you will definitely will be able to make it, as I promised to let the landlord know one way or the other on Thursday.

Hopefully see you all on Friday  (:)

Andy

PS thanks Katie for the suggestion  (:) Please let any locals know who might be interested in a per-workshop warmup and who are unlikely to be lurking on melnet!

I can be there but maybe nearer 9 - we'll be driving up and will need to get something to eat.
