I would like to echo that, and look forward to lots of lively discussion here, and the main site being improved and added to. Thanks Squeezy, and thanks Theo and Clive and the rest of the gang, if applicable.

I'd also like to add a plea for a rule that posters should not use multiple identities - even if they are multiple personality sufferers like old Bill. :P

OK. If all is well I should be using my real name on the new board (and not my Shakespearean internet nom de plume).

Do we have two different logins, one for the main site and one for the forum? I'm confused.

Most of us don't need to log in to use the main site unless you want to help with the admin.

Most of us will want to log in as members of the forum, cos otherwise you can't contribute.

Ooh I didn't know this was happening, nice one. Fraid I'm going to stick to this name though, I just don't ever use my real name online.

Thanks Theo!

As I'm sure a lot of you can tell - having the responsibility of melodeon.net taken away from me is certainly welcome at this point in time.  I initially came up with the idea of the site / forum in 2003 when I was searching for melodeon based information on the net and couldn't find anything of any help that didn't just want to sell me something - I already knew a lot about the squeezebox having played one for a bit and also having worked for a few years at The Music Room.  So I decided unilaterally to buy up the melodeon.net address and do something with it because I thought that something should exist which was a resource for players, enthusiasts, makers etc that was non-commercial, could give people balanced opinion on makes, models, keyboard layouts etc. without a bias towards certain manufacturers that the shop sites contain.

During the end of 2004 when I had finally got the site up and running I turned full time as a professional musician which was a bigger deal than I thought at the time - at first I thought it meant that you just play music and get paid for it - but the world of long touring, agents, managers, accountants etc. made me realise that it is actually a business being self-employed as well as going round the country (and world) playing the box.  Melodeon.net was much less of a priority for me because of that; and that is why the main site has been so stagnant until Theo has taken up the baton.

Thankfully - the forum has been one of the most life-affirming things I think I have ever seen on the net.  It was there at the start of melodeon.net, but it grew and grew and was used for just the intention I imagined the whole site would be.  It has taken on a life of it's own with representatives from most of the melodeon traditions who selflessly give great advice to anyone who wants to ask a question despite the fact that effectively there's been no moderation since 2004 unless someone has specifically emailed me to let me know there's a problem.

I can't say it hasn't been stressful being in charge.  Every time I've done a gig - or taught at melodeons@witney there's been a sort of tension because we all know I haven't updated the main site for ages.  There was a nutter who upset the boards for a while and I felt the need to get involved and ban his IP addresses (he was posting from a library outside Dundee so it was a bit tricky tracking him down) - and there was the time that I got accused fairly unpleasantly of being biased towards Saltarelle products by a high-profile maker who had been lovely to me up until that point ( I just like my ones, honest! ).  But given the amount of usage melodeon.net has had (well over a million page views for the forum since 2004) - it is amazing that the forum has been so hassle-free.

So now it's handover time.  I have asked that the domain melodeon.net is not used for commercial purposes but remains a sort of public service for anyone who wants to know about squeezeboxes.  I can think of no-one better than Theo - who has certainly embraced the world of melodeon playing/repair etc. like no-one else I know - to take over at the helm.  I hope I can still make contributions as a member - I hope Theo know's quite what a task he's taken on - and I hope that everyone at melodeon.net gets the website they deserve as players of God's own instrument.

Cheers

Yes, I want to join everyone in thanking Theo, and add a thank you to Squeezy for starting this out.  Years ago I wished for a melodeon.net and you made the wish come true!
I raise a glass to both of you,
Andy

What a wally.
First I log in, numero uno I think, in my alter ego, then initiate this thread and forget to thank Squeezy.
I shall wear sackcloth and ashes for the rest of my days in retribution.
Mind you, those poor unfortunates who know me, realise I'll be better dressed.
