La Russe is a reel. Why would you be mixing it with polkas?
I guess you can play it however you like, but south of the border, especially in the deeper south where Sandy comes from, it is commonly played as a polka.

And what's with this Scan Tester? I thought that was some kind of electronic instrument?
Look and learn... ;)

It's late at night and perhaps I have drink taken but La Russe is a great tune, we played it in our session tonight and I will tell you this.
You can play it as a reel, a polka, a rant (don't get me started now!), a jig, a waltz, a two-step or a feckin merengue, La Russe won't mind!

When I was taught la russe, couples rant across, they don't gallop or skip. Stepping would be ok , the main message is that it should be played slow enough to stop the mad gallops.

I'm glad I'm not the only one - I used the electronic sort. Since put straight by Eliza Carthy...

Now there are two words you don't often hear together.

how la russe is played varies according to where you are!

My other melodeon's a fiddle, but one of my Hohners has six strings! I also play a very red Hawkins Bazaar in C and a generic Klingenthaler spoon bass in F.!! My other pets (played) are gobirons - Hohner Marine Band in C, Hohner Tremolo in D and a Chinese Thingy Tremolo in G.

Which is why "oh Joe the boat" is the perfect partner for La Russe  ;)

La Russe is a reel.
Not the way I play it.  And I usually pair it with The Curly Headed Ploughboy.
