In the school where I teach there are several Irish traveller families. They mostly live on a caravan site on the edge of town, but it is not unusual for either the children, or just the parents (with the kids looked after by older siblings or other relatives), to go to Ireland travelling for several months in the summer. Despite the fact that the kids live in Hertfordshire, and may well have been born here, they generally have a distinctive 'Irish' accent, suggesting a very close community.

I am not aware of any musical tradition with these families, but I can try to make some (discrete) enquires.

I`ve shot Traveller weddings and first communions so get to know quite a few families very well and i`ve not seen any musical interest bar iPods and big stereos in their trailers but of course that doesn`t mean other areas and sites haaven`t musical tradition.

I`ve shot Traveller ...

No wonder they're an ethnic minority!

Just surmising on the extended Romany family that visits the Dartmoor festival - they have a strong musical tradition and the local side of the family play Dartmoor style box.  My local friends (Hampshire) don't have a musical tradition, so I guess this is the same as in the whole community - some do, some don't.  Going back to Dartmoor, the tunes tend to be local Dartmoor tradition and the songs a mix of Romany and local (therefore Irish).

Just observations, so tell me if I'm wrong!

I used to go with the Morris side, but not for the last few years.  Somehow travelling away always involves drinking and since the diagnosis as type 2 diabetic it kinda curbs my enthusiasm.  I also inherited cats who demand my immediate attention at all times, day or night and one, being basically feral isn't welcome at a cattery.  The Orchard family ran the session in one pub and a huge number of their extended family came over from Ireland - at least I guess they're family as everyone was an aunt or uncle.

The Traditional Music Day at the Museum of East Anglian Life in Stowmarket usually attracts quite a few Travellers who seem to go mainly for the step dancing. They are very, very good!

The event is run by the East Anglian Traditional Music Trust and it is usually on the Saturday nearest to the 1st of September each year.

Going back to Dartmoor, the tunes tend to be local Dartmoor tradition and the songs a mix of Romany and local (therefore Irish).

Plus the inevitable Country and Western, gypsy style  :D

As Rob says, The Orchard Family in Dartmoor continue the Bob Cann melodeon style (which is heavily influenced by Jimmy Shand).
They have released two CDs on the Veteran label.
Jean Orchard's mother is Amy Birch who features on the Topic records Voice of the People series.

The Essex step-dance posse don't seem to have any musicians so mostly dance to recorded music although I have seen them stepping to an acoustic guitar or an unaccompanied version of a Slim Whitman song. They love it when they meet up with a bunch of folkies with real
instruments. Fabulous dancing, young Leo Temple being their top gun.

Codie Roberts lives on a traveller site in North Shropshire. He's a big fan of Jimmy Shand but plays gypsy style up and down the rows. He wants to play the Bluebell Polka in it's original keys, i.e. G, D and C. I'm about to convert a Club Morino to C/D/G (aaargh!!!) so that he can achieve his ambition. (I have nagged him senseless to learn B/C/C# but it's never going to happen).
Here he is playing a Shand waltz on a Shand Morino. Classic gypsy box playing - enjoy  (:)

Great stuff !!. Elvis is sounding great. Inspired by that, I`ll have to try more English stuff on the Morino (heavier than Elvis and the 3rd row is just loads of accidentals) . Gotta Love big boxes !.

Great tune, Tommy, and it really suits your style. From what I've heard of your clan playing at Dartmoor Festival, they seen to go for a mixture of English dance tunes (for step-dancing etc) played in that style and a broader medley of popular tunes, many of them song-tunes. Is there anything else that you'd pick out as being distinctive about gypsy/traveller music as it's played today?

We've not really had any clear answers about whether Irish "travellers" have any particular music of their own. I suspect they don't, at least  in England, but would be interested to hear if I'm wrong.

I think it was Simon Doyle and his family. He's a fine piper and one of his daughters plays box.

I've attended this event both as a punter and as a guest and I cannot recommend it too highly. A great day and evening too.
