a problem with a Hascy?
« on: November 23, 2008, 07:32:27 PM »

I would like to have comments and proposals concerning this:

I have a seconhand rather new Castagnari Hascy for trial a few days. Wonderful tone and excellent handwork as expected. BUT seems to me that it has a weak point in getting the tones in action immediately and precisely when I press a button. It feels like it hesitates a bit and I have to force the movements of the bellow more than usual with my other two melodeons - Serenellini and Mengascini - to get a precise intonation. That of course influences the musical output negatively. If I on the other hand try to play rather soft and silently the tones tend to disappear.

A fellow musician here in Denmark tells me that he years ago had the same problem with a Castagnari and had it solved by a prof. repair-man. He himself cannot tell more about the case, and that actual prof. is hard to trace right away.

Any opinions about cause and solution?

The reeds need a bit of work to get them voiced correctly.  It is a common problem even on some new instruments straight from the shop.  A good repair person should be able to get it set up properly with an hour or so in the workshop.

Thanks for answer, Theo.

The box has been played by the owner for about a year regularly but not intensely, and in a disciplined and caretaking manner.
Could one say that the box perhaps still needs more playing to "wake up"? Or is the problem of another, perhaps opposite character?

Do you know anything about the methods a pro repair-man would use to create a more precise intonation?
