BC to BCC# transition experiences
« on: December 21, 2012, 10:44:04 PM »

Hi

Been playing B/C with 8 bass for just over a year.

Constantly arguing with myself on the topic of whether to give the BCC# with stradella bass a try.
Interested to hear of experiences of making this transition.

Should say I play mostly Scottish music some Irish, American Folk, Country and Popular music.

Play mostly by ear, do quite often check against written music if it’s available but can’t read at playing speed.

Play mostly in G and D – a little in A and C

Not really to bothered about playing in lots of keys for the time being.

I am aware that the C# row can be used in 2 ways:
1.   Play on 2 rows exactly like a BC but move across to CC# to go up a semitone using same fingering.
2.   Use all 3 rows to give more bellows direction options.
How do you use the C# row? (From observation a substantial number of players appear not to use it)

Is the 12 bass stradella (eg. Trichord) worthwhile in the medium to long term? Or so limited that it will quickly frustrate?

Once you have learned the BCC# with stradella how easy is it to swap between it and the BC with 8 bass?

Have you stuck with the 3 row?

If not, was this due to:
1.   Brain hurt too much.
2.           Weight and size of 3 row.
Or
3.           Preferring 2 row sound?

Any advice/experience welcome.

Thanks

I seem to remember John Kirkpatrick's version of this is: mostly use B and C rows but use the C# row for RH chords/harmonies when needed.
Also when I had a B/C/C# box I used substitutes from the C# row when it would help with bellows management, i.e. your option 2.

I have never owned a BC box but I'd expect to use the basses very little on it, whereas I used to make extensive melodic use of the basses on the three row Stradella box.
