Bob Cann
« on: December 31, 2012, 12:26:28 PM »

I have been listening to some recordings of Bob Cann on Spotify and was curious as to what type of melodeon he is playing. Any ideas?

Can't be sure but I seem to remember him playing a Hohner Club IIIM and the Ouverture which Mark Bazeley now plays.

Martyn is right on both counts. The red Club III ( which I managed to break) and in 1983 Bob bought the Ouverture V. I have no recollection of what his first box was though

Quote from this site

"In 1983 Bob bought a new melodeon, A Hohner Ouverture V and Mark now about ten became the owner of his red Hohner Club IIIM.  During the 80's other musicians played in the band including Kate Marriot on fiddle, Jimmy Elliot on whistle and clarinet and Derek Byron on fiddle."

If you mean Tony Hall, piano player amongst other instruments he is an amazing fellow.
Oh! forget all the above. It was Reg Hall I was thinking of, well worth looking up on the net.
It's an age thing, sorry folks.

Here's a good summary in his own words

Thanks for that very interesting and I'm even more intrigued by him now. Heres a video of him playing.

Both Bob Cann and Tony Hall were early inspirations for me when or even before I started played melodeon.

I believe Tony Hall coined the term Costalotti many years ago as a now widely-used generic name for expensive Italian boxes.

You can't get any idea of his sense of humour in live performance from watching those YouTube videos, and his best playing is quite astounding. Try Fieldvole Music (Free Reed Records) as well as the WildGoose album made more recently. Ooh, there are sound clips there...

I think I'd like to see him perform live if he's still knocking around.

Tony Hall is. I don't think he has a web site - I have it on good authority that even a Fax machine is technology beyond his comprehension.

BTW see this thread on Tony Hall: http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php?topic=659.0

Not that I'd post on Soundcloud, because unlike the EMP album they're still available to buy :-)
