Castagnari Melodeon
« on: December 05, 2008, 11:08:47 AM »

I am interested in starting on the one row melodeon and was thinking of buying one of these in D. Are they considered a good melodeon? I see a number of fine musicians play them and this says something..What do people think?

I've never owned one but my impression is that people either love them or hate them.  Also, in area where specific styles have been developed for one-row playing (specific examples Louisiana or Quebec), they are not considered very useful for those styles.  But, as you say, a number of musicians play them and play them very well.  They also appear to me to be built to Castignari's usual standards of design and precision of working parts.

There is some chat about the Castagnari Max (which I think is the same box) here

Yes they're great (a Frosties moment!) but at the top end of the price scale.  If you're serious about playing it and have heard the style of music you want top play and it is four-stop style, then you'll be alright.  If you want to play for dance and the style is not East-Anglian, Cajun or Quebec, then a two tow will give you better value for money.  I have one in C, but it's played as a variation in sound and style from the two row, two or three voice quint boxes.

An alternative to an expensive 1-row like the Max would be the good old Hohner 4-stop in D.

:) I expect you've checked this website's shop listings, but in case you haven't, Reece Wesson has a L'Imaginiere 4 stop in D for sale. If you have a Castagnari Max budget, this might suit and will leave you almost half your wad still intact!!?? Worth a chat at least - Reece knows his stuff.
For what its worth, I'd say that the bass end shape of the Castagnari (square edges) put me off mine many years ago, so I sold it. I have a couple of Louisiana boxes (D & C) now, which are much more comfortable to play and at least as fast/loud as the Max. Also, C seems a slightly better key for a 4 stop - its all subjective, but that key just seems to respond better, IMHO.

I have a Castagnari Max in C which I love very much.
Last year, Dazbo of this forum made a few videos of me playing it and put them up on his YouTube site.
Here's one of the tunes and you will see links to a few others.
