Inside and Out... the Shand Morino
« on: January 14, 2013, 09:02:54 AM »

Hi everyone,

I've just finished a blog post on the construction of the Shand Morino. This is an amazing instrument, hence why the post is so long! Stick with it though, because there are some fascinating things in there. Please let me know if there is any part that isn't clear and I will amend it.

Nice work Owen , exellent and comprehensive insight . I`d post this on the Accordion Forum too as the box`s following is at its strongest there

You may want to have a look at the Club Morino sometime as it managed to squeeze 5 voices into an even smaller space whilst using a lot of the tech from the Shand (2 rows of pallets for 3 rows of 3 voices, other 2 in a chamber) , the build quality is more Gola than Morino in the N version of the club too for some strange reason .

At some point I probably will!

I can send you the pics you need , let me know. it`s the most beautifully made Hohner I`ve seen this side of a Gola (including other Morinos) , especially the (apparently) Chromed internal metalwork and the lovely woodwork on the reedblocks, soundboards, Pallets etc, the insides are far nicer to look at the than the outside ! . the reeds are almost touching in this also.

Pasta sauce comes next.

I enjoyed the article bdw, I'd never thought about the influence that some of the factors you mentioned would have on sound.

Finally found time to read it properly.
Great piece of descriptive writing, Owen.
But how do you follow that?
Or to paraphrase Squeezy, which air buttons are you planning to look through next?

Well there is one instrument that would beat it, but it's apparently very difficult to track down... probably there won't be another inside and out for a while though, in order to let everyone recover!

Hmm, I thought he was thinking of Hohner but the only weird Hohners I can think of are the Morino Club (which I have) and the Preciosa (which I think he has already got) .  the rest are "normal" even the Ouverture-V is a standard design and has 5 voice pallets, the Corona-IIIR is merely a Club-IIIM with proper rows and the correct number of buttons on the top row, the Liliput like a Mini-2915 with as few extra buttons and an odd treble action.

The very popular Club ll/Erika has three rows but only two reed blocks.

So has the Liliput but they`re far from three full rows, it`s only 4 extra buttons which could have been added to the main rows if they`d wanted and didn`t mind a wider fingerboard (they`re better where they are of course)

Well, continuing the thread drift, here's a fairly unusual variant of the "rectangular-box" midsize Hohners -- an early 3 voice version of the black dot Double Ray B/C:

Yep- that`s basically a "Pre-Corso" Double-ray deluxe without Deluxe written on it
