Value of pre war Hohners
« on: January 27, 2013, 03:42:59 PM »

The recent thread on the value of 'preloved' Castagnaris got me musing. I've got four Hohner 1040's, all pre 1949. I do'nt have a clue what these magic little boxes cost when new, but I paid arround the £200 mark for each of them, fully fettled and playing like a dream. So I've paid £200 for a 70 ish year old box that looks good for another 70 years. As thousands of them were made there must be loads on the market [except when I'm looking for one] so it's doubtful that the price is going to go up. This must be the greatest investment in a playable and sought after musical instrument ever..... (:) :||:

They were round the £7.50 mark, new in the early fifties.
That equates to more than £200 today so maybe you have bought them at the right time.

All the Hohners I currently own were bought 2nd (or 12th!) hand; the most I've ever paid for one was, if I recall correctly, about £80 for an 1140 in playing condition - mind you, this was a few years back - and the cheapest £40, about 18 months ago and sold for spares or repair (the latter, in my case).  I've no idea what any of these boxes would have cost fully fettled and ready to go, but I've had an enormous amount of pleasure from both resurrecting and playing them, and learned a great deal in the process. Money well spent for me, regardless of any market value.

My first Hohner Pokerwork ,bought from Bells Surbiton  in 1972 cost £60.00.
I was earning at that time about £14.00 Quid a week and as many of you know, it ended its life in the river Sid.

Well, it seems that they've given us great pleasure at a very modest cost. I bet the old boys who built them never dreamed that they would still be being played all these years later.. (:) :||: :||: :||:

Lets face it, in the early 70s , most of us didn`t think there`d still be ford escorts still on the road in the 21st century let alone be playing meldeons made before WW2 .....

Back then, 21st century = Star ships and holidays on Mars, that may have been the case if the space program had progressed at the rate it was doing through the 50s, 60s and early 70s but it slowed to a standstill in that respect - too much time and money spent on the arms race :( . lets face it, all 40 years has added to the Melodeon is the FR18 , now that`s Sad..

That is so true Brian. I have several "oldies" and I often wonder while playing them who the previous owners were, what were their lives like? And what a pity we can't communicate with them. I'm sure many boxes have amazing stories to tell, likewise their owners.

Somebody referred to my Preciosa as having quite a strident voice...

What do you expect from a Nazi?

It's going to be really easy to keep the secrecy, with Hohners being such quiet, reticent instruments.

We'd need to check on ownership. Doesn't matter if you bought you Hohner or were given it, remember you'll be in good company:

Or:

We only want bona Hohner owners, we welcome donor Hohner owners, but there's no loner Hohner owners here.
