Tune of the Month for February 2013: In Continental Mood
« on: January 31, 2013, 11:44:29 PM »

Narrow loser last month, clear winner this month, is Andy Cutting's fine waltz, In Continental Mood

Here played by our own Roland, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBGs7G8OCzI&NR=1, and here by the man himself, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcdmqDEM5mo (first tune). Rather less well known than Flatworld (the second tune that both Andy and Roland play) it's typically played with.

Had a quick play through with this myself a few days ago - naturally, it sits on the higher register in G on a D/G box, which of course means that a low reed on your box is helpful unless you like really squeaky music! It can be shoehorned into having most of it in the lower register if you don't fancy that - it helps to have a low B on the treble, and you jump up an octave for the start of the B music.

The chord sequence at the start also rather calls out for a F#minor chord on a D/G - the opening run down being - G-F#m-Em-D... but that can be fudged with a substituted B minor chord perhaps.

Courtesy of tallship, here's some ABC:
Code: [Select]
X:1
T:In Continental Mood
M:3/4
L:1/8
Q:150
C:Andy Cutting
R:Mazurka
K:G
ga|b2 b  bab|g2 g  bab|g2 g  bab|gab  agf|e2 e  efg|d2 d  dfg|
c2 c  efg|a2 a  aga|b2 b  bab|g2 g  bab|g2 g  bab|gab  agf|
e2 e  efg|d2 d  efg|a2 b  agf|g3  dBA||G2B  GBd|F2B  FBd|
E2G  EGB|AAB  AGF|G2B  GBd|F2B  FBd|E2G  EGB|A4GA|B2_e  B_ef|
gag  fef|d2f  dfa|bc'b  agf|e2e  efg|d2d  efg|a2b  agf|g4||

I'd have to say though that you'll usually hear it as a waltz rather than a mazurka. However, it makes a *cracking* slow mazurka in my opinion (I think I prefer it to the waltz version), and having had a quick play through, it does strike me that it's a *very* flexible tune - it makes a creditable jig, hornpipe, 5 time waltz, mazurka etc. Or maybe I was just drunk.

Anyway, good playing folks - looking forward to seeing what we can come up with!

Cheers,

Clive

PS: [[[ Just got the OK from Andy to use this tune - thanks again Andy! ]]]

Isn't it a waltz, rather than a mazurka?

For amusement, here's a version of it I did some time ago, mazurka'ed and played using a harmonic minor tuning (still in D/G I think) on the Streb.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BGxwSomrUw

I think I had to mess around with a small part of the B music to make it fit, but other than that, it's exactly the same fingering as the major version.

Yes it is, I've looked it up in the Blowzabella book 'New Tunes For Dancing' and it's listed with the waltzes. The ABC isn't my transcription I just grabbed it off the net or from one of my collections of ABC tunes, thought it sounded okay and posted it, to be honest I'd don't think I even read the headers! ABC converters and software don't seem to recognise a 3/4 as anything other than a waltz when playing back the tune as a midi. Oddly enough the R: field can contain any text but software will only act upon the few words it recognises.

Try popping this into the Tune-O-Tron  >:E :

Too close to the edge of my capability to even think about twiddling with.

Chords are my approximations but seem in the mood.

Glad it's not just me struggling with it - nicely played though!

Had to relearn bits of this to play it on my Loffet, but pleased with the sound; I think the tone of the instrument suits the tune. I remain in awe of Andy Cutting - it's beyond my comprehension how anyone can dream up a melody like this.

My effort is here:

Here we go folks, in the spirit of Alan Day's magnificent Spaghetti Panic jig rewrite, here's In Continental Mood, played as a jig. Played in C on the G/C Hohner...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeqhTVlFAns

The original is a really lovely tune, and I certainly don't think this version is better than Andy's original, but it still makes a rather pleasant rondeau/champenois tune I think.

Cheers,

Clive

Domo arigato, Maki. (I've been trying to learn a few words of Japanese before I visit my son in Tokyo in April!) Nicely played. I'm still struggling to play these tunes!

It's the 23rd February already and only a handful of folks have posted; a measure of how hard this tune is to get to grips with.  I don't think my version will get any better in the next 5 days...so here it is: http://youtu.be/g_-6OucJxUo - played on a D/G Liliput.

I love this tune;it's been going round in my aged nut from the moment it was played here. Due to a quirk in the West Country weather I'm separated from my boxes for a few days or I would'nt ask, but could it be played on a single row ? If so is there a chance of someone doing just that on Youtube? (:) :||:

If you have a one row in G, that has a low E then you could play all of the tune except for the Eb that occurs in the second half of the tune.  Missing out one note seems not to be much, but to my ear it takes away something important.  It would be like eating chips without any salt!

Many thanks Theo;am I right in thinking that I'd need 4th button start to get the low E? [I hope I'm not pressing your patience button too hard..] :||: :|bl
