Re: Melodeon Jazz - some chords and stuff
« Reply #40 on: March 25, 2013, 08:29:21 AM »

During impro, chords in "classic" jazz commonly settle to a series of ii-V-I progressions. 2/5/1s are not common in session folk tunes, but perfectly playable on eg a D/G/acc 2 row

II-V-I in D   (A7 chord=pull, note 9ths available!)

Em                   A79; [C:♯9!]      Dmaj7
 o  o  o  o  o |    o  o  A  [C]  o |    o  F# A  o  o
o o E  G  B       o C# E G B  o      o C# o  o  o

Play the final D on the bass, or just a simple D triad ..  :D

ii-V-i in Em   (B7 is push, as per its bass)

F#m7b5              B7                     Em
 o  F# A  C  E |    Eb  o  o  B  o |     o  o  o  o  o
o  o  o  o  o       o  o  o  F# A  o     o  o E  G  B

A couple of impro scales for the minor .. You can "go bananas" on the B7  >:E

F# locrian scale (mainly pull, D note push)

 o  F# A  C  D/E F#
o  o  o  G  B  o

You can use bog standard Em dorian (with C♯), or the softer Em aolian (C) throughout, or try

E Blues scale = E, G, A, Bb, B, D, E  (mainly pull, D note push)

  o  o  A  o  D/E o
Bb o  E  G  B

.. so plenty to work with (as ever, it's in our "sweet" spots)  :|glug

Marito Aguilar - Joel Guzman - Acordeones Anacleto De Hohner - YouTube.  One of you fellows has a blog which is where I first saw a clip of Joel working the eb'' key on his GCF with his thumb.  Music sounded a bit continental perhaps?  He and this other fellow are going all-out Van Damme here though.   8)

Agree, the second fella has a very continental mood to his music, not sure I can put the young lad in a pidgeon-hole, maybe others can.  If I might continue my 'what is jazz' in context of melodeonism thesis .. I'd call this 'jazzy' .. put 'em together and it would probably amount to 'jazz'  ::)

It certainly ain't Morris music or Playford  ;)

This style originates from Texas, specifically the Lower Rio Grande Valley, known to locals simply as 'El Valle'. Hence the stylistic name 'Valley'. This is regarded by many as the true Tejano sound - a heady mix of tight vocal harmonies, strict tempo polka rhythms and showy 1940s jazz tinged accordion fills.

Isn't this place amazing, always someone knows chapter and verse! Thanks Mike. Your stuff is fairly jazzy. What's your take on the general topic?  :|glug

A J Castillo has some pretty hot licks on three row GCF

First public outing for the Streb this eve, playing "Explotar Part 2" at a local jazz jam.

Thanks for the heads up; enjoyed that. :-)

(So nice being able to dial up tunings like G/C/F with a couple of buttons, and plug straight into the PA.)

This is more of a cumbia / norteño cross over...

...encouraged by the jazz jam, I managed to evade security and sneak on stage for a bit of Castillo at a Blues night yesterday.  ;)

They were fascinated by the Streb. (Don't think they're ready for the bagpipes yet though.)
