Best type of foam to pad out a carrying bag
« on: February 08, 2013, 08:21:19 PM »

(:) Finally found a carrying bag that will comfortably take the melodeon,    :|||: , a Stagg padded gig bag for a Cajon  ;D but I'd like to add some firm foam to support and cushion the fingerboards as they both project out from the middle of the instrument.

What would be the best?  It would need 4 bocks about 3" x 4" x 11", and perhaps some extra sheet foam adding top and bottom to protect it when either stood on it's end or laid flat on it's back in the bag, thinking of attaching the foam with velcro  (:)

   Advice gratefully received  ;D

I use foam from a 1/2" foam sleeping pad - like the kind for backpacking/camping

You've really only got two choices...closed cell foam or open cell foam. "Closed cell" means that the individual "bubbles" in the foam are closed, and retain their air. Open cell, obviously, is the opposite. Closed cell is firmer, and doesn't compress as much. A camping pad is closed cell. An example of open cell foam would be what's often called "foam rubber" hereabouts, though I suppose this could apply to either. Me, I used bubble wrap when faced with the same difficulty.

Thanks,   ;D  I'll have a look down town this morning, one of the shops that sells camping gear is having a sale so there may be some mats to be had and there's some bubblewrap in the attic  ;D
