Case for a Hohner 1 Row 4 Stop
« on: December 16, 2008, 07:55:45 PM »

Can anyone suggest a source for a suitably sized and sensibly priced case or gig bag for a Hohner 1 row 4 stop?

I've been using a small rucksack which doesn't give much protection.

Thanks,

Andy

Snap!
I carry mine around in a slightly padded day sack, too.  It depends how "clunky" you'll accept in order to increase the protection.  There are some aluminium cantilever tray toolboxes in B&Q which I believe would convert quite nicely to a solid case for a four-stop, but may be a bit OTT?

I've seen a small cool bag designed for carrying a six-pack used for this purpose.

Another possibility is the nice padded bag that Eagle music sell for carrying a Castagnari Lily.

I got one of  these 1/2 price in their sale a few years ago and it has worked fine but I must say it would be much nicer without the hard base. I also use my original Mally Bag which gave may years hard service with my Erica.

An aside about the old Mally Bag, I was talking to a supplier about modern stringed instrument cases who said that the first thing to go would be the zip and when I mentioned the Mally Bag he pronounced they were of exceptional quality and not to expect other inexpensive cases to last that well.

Back in 1982 when I bought my Hohner G 4-stop Dave Mallinson used to offer a 1-row Mallybag. I've still got it and it's done good service. I guess they went out of production due to the numbers sold being less than the 2-row bag. There is definitely the need for one to be available, it's just who to suggest it to. Any ideas?

Would not an old LP case with foam added be a suitable option?  A bit big perhaps but fairly robust.

Nick Cooke of Glorystrokes used to carry his 2 and a half row Castagnari round in a fairly battered Tesco coolbag  IIRC

Actually my 1 Row used to live in an old LP case. however that fell to pieces a number of years ago. First the plastic 'hinge' for the lid split, which meant you couldn't carry it and then a side seam split to make it virually usesless for storage.

However I think the coolbag idea could be worth investigating.

Terrorists also appear to understand the value of timing, which is more than can be said for some morris dancers.

However the bullet-proof LP case looks a good bet - thanks Waltham.

I had a guitar case - a big heavy "road case" cost about $175.  Figured it was a worthy investment until a girl sat on it at a party.  I was playing the guitar at the time, but the whole thing cracked along the right-angle edge and wouldn't buckle closed ever again.  Be sure an LP case will support your weight if you use it as a stoop.  And keep the big girls off of it.  :)

Another option would be a custom-made box. Contact some of your local woodcrafters, you would be surprised at what you may find!

It's not difficult to keep girls from throwing themselves at melodeon players and rarely will they sit on anything offered !!
