most prevelent diatonic accordion
« on: December 20, 2008, 04:23:39 PM »

What would you say is the most common diatonic accordion worldwide?  I would guess it would be the three row international.  I'm curious as to what others might think.

My vote goes to the Hohner Corona II.

On second thought, the 2-row Pokerwork should also be on the top of the list!

It certainly used to be the Polkawork, but that was when we went to festivals in Morris with a dog called Rover.
Now we go to festivals in Rover with a dog called Morris it has to be one of the Costaloties
For further proof see Dazbo's Poll of who owns what box on this site.

Or the poll could be biased, people who can afford Costalottis are more likely to have broadband access and be interested enough in melodeons to read these forums and enter the poll than the large number of old-school Pokerwork players...

On the other hand people who have not paid for Costallotis might be more likely to afford broadband? ;D ;D

There are myriad models of Costalloti, so, by model, there can be comparitively few world wide compared to say a a Pokerwork of an Erika.

If you looked at the total volume of Hohners produced - even post war, it would dwarf the output of Castelfidello.

So it's goingto Hohner not Costalotti isn't it?

In North America it seems that there are few italian boxes (Gabbanelli does not count as it has a factory in USA) and lots of Hohner.

The Corona II and III are immensely popular in the Tex-Mex world.

In Canada Hohner has ruled for decades, there isn't a session where you won't find at least a Erika/Erica, Corso, Pokerwork, or older 2-row models, or a Corona. My father started playing in 1949 on a Hohner and now owns 3.

By the same token I own only one Castagnari but three Hohners and have bought sold others.

Hohners must win and the Polkawork must be one of the main contenders for pole position.  Anyone from Hohner sales department read this forum, no trade secrets but which model is the leader ?
