Just keep a Lilly around the house; Tommy's sound "basso profundo".

The Tonmy has two different bass set ups dependant on its age. The earlier ones had a shared reed setup whereas the later ones did not. Quite what difference it makes to the sound I don't know because I have never had one of each available at the same time.

Not sure that actually helps (:)

I did try a more recent Tommy last summer actually and I did think it was better. Still didn't like it though.

Lillys aren't quite as bad, I think because of the reed sharing making the strain less obvious. Also there is less mismatch between the ends, with the majestic right hand of a Tommy you expect there to be a similarly majestic bass :P

Lester: I think mine's a second generation type, albeit a few years old, and I'm sure there has been another modification.
Ukebert seems to have noticed something too.
Out of sheer noseyness, I'm waiting to find out what's happened when one of the Melodeon Doctors on here has had one on the operating table.

I think I'm starting to get most of the notes in roughly the right order...... sometimes!

Had one of the newer types in the workshop last week but as the customer was stood waiting for a quicky fix I did not have time to investigate the differences other than the bass mechanism was rather crude looking up against the one I owned (since replaced by an Erica)

I have a new Tommy and have not opened it up, since I don't know what the older ones used to look like.

However, it is bigger and maybe a little heavier than the older ones, I am sure of it, not sure why or where.

Well when you do you can compare it with this image of my old style shared reed bass end

That only goes to show there are three types of bass ends for a Tommy as the one I had in the workshop recently had some L shaped pallets  ???

When Jon and I were compairing my old v's their ( Music Room ) new, just simply, side by side, Jon thought the new ones were a mm or two larger. With customers hovering around a busy stall we couldn't take it any further.
Lester - is there any dimension you could suggest that would contribute to 'improvements'?
....and could we compare by putting a ruler across something somewhere?
( or am I being too simplistic?)

Also......
I think poor old Spikey's had his thread well and truely hijacked - is it worth splitting it off as a seperate thread?

Not really one to ask about "improvements" to a Tommy's bass end as my improvement was to tape off the thirds and the low bass note to make the whole bass much sparser, whereas the thrust of this thread seems to be how to make it louder/fuller.

Biggest improvement to my Tommy was to install a new owner   (:)

I WANT one, but isn't that a Lilly(Nope!) that young Daisy Chrissie is playing there?  Incidentally my own Lilly is finally home from a Theo revamp. After spending several months languishing at Grandma's it should pass to new "real blonde" owner Dolly May next month. I do hope she'll actually play it  ;)

[edit] Whoops  :|bl  I defer to the superior knowledge of Lester and Theo in this

It has the raised grill and treble send stop of a Tommy.

It is not a Lilly or a Daisy. It is a Tommy and a Chrissie! I know its a Tommy as it is my old one that I sold to her  (:)

The newest bass mechanism looks a lot less labor intensive to construct.

The newest bass mechanism looks a lot less labor intensive to construct.
Compared to my "old" G/C Tommy from the late 80's there have been other obvious cost-cutting measures on today's model -- for example, the fretsaw-cut curved veneer-on-aluminium treble end grille (beautiful and strong but must have been a pig to make) looks to have been replaced by a flat (laser-cut?) wooden one.

And if the overall size has also increased a little bit (has it?) this might be to remove some of the cutaway shenanigans needed (for example, in the bellows frames to avoid reed blocks) -- the old ones weren't quite such a mad cram-everything-in-to-the smallest-possible-space-regardless-of-difficulty exercise as a Preciosa, but not that far off...
