I'm glad you enjoy it, and you really need a big bellow with all these reeds in that box, 4 voices on the treble anf five on the bass side with very low reeds, sometimes i would like a bigger bellow but my left arm will be too short  ;)

Welcome to the forum Etienne, I enjoyed your playing and the sound of that powerful box very much. Interpreting a particular piece in your own way has become the hallmark of Tune of the Month and the variety of styles and ideas keeps the whole concept fresh and exciting month after month. Your version of the tune fits in perfectly and you don't need forgiveness from anyone for not playing it "the right way".

A quick stab at it here:

http://youtu.be/qPhq8zvyVdI

A nice tune that I haven't really done justice to, but since I've managed to learn it, I thought I'd put something up. I really don't like the left hand and, time permitting, will have a go at improving through Clive's helpful tutorial...

And now for a video of a woman with massive knees.... ;)

This is my third TOTM posting and part of my New Year's 'boxolution' to have a crack at TOTM (almost) each month this year.

  • In dampest Dorset, on the soggy south coast.

Very presentable. Think I could dance to that quite comfortably.

Is someone out there making playlists?

I went ahead and put all the Youtube entries together in a playlist, for those of us who just can't get enough of Wraggle Taggle Gypsies on the melodeon:

Here's my posting for this month - first is a version of the song accompanied on guitar, followed by the tune in Dm played on my C/F Hohner. Presented a few image/sound/splicing challenges, I can tell yer! :Ph

I don't know what all the frowning was for ;) - that was really great!

As the end of the month looms yet again I finally got something recorded (and after nearly a year of having a go at TOTM I'm not sure it's getting any easier to record - but still a wonderful incentive to learn a tune (almost) properly before rushing on to the next one).  Being from the Waterboys era, this was the version I knew.  I'm not sure why, but the C chord didn't sound right.  So I didn't use it.

Thank you Spikey for your kind words on my post. Your version sounds really competent (and confident) so don't stress about future toons.
I've now recorded lots of things - some are relatively straightforward and some totally not! For me, this song and tune were reasonably ok to play so there weren't too many takes but putting them together proved tricky. Also, if I'm just playing a tune I generally only film my box, not my phisog, so you can't see whether I'm pulling odd faces!  On the other hand with a tune that's difficult to play like Stoney Steps this month or one that's new, like Herbert the Sherbet was to me the other month, I usually wear out quite a few batteries in my camera and digital recorder recording umpteen attempts to get a version without too many howlers.
Anyhow, keep up the good work.  (:)

Nice playing Daniel, you've make impressive progress since I gave you one of my old PA's 8 weeks ago.

As this is Melnet, here's Daniel playing Sheriff's Ride on the melodeon. He's probably forgotten he recorded it   (:)

Thank you Mcgrooger (:).  It is very reassuring to hear of your recording battles.  I do much prefer to see other people's faces on their recordings (melodeon face or not!), but just can't bear to see mine up there on the screen.  Your Stoney Steps was very impressive too - it is on my list of 'if only I could manage to play it' tunes.  Like last month's TOTM ::).

Here's my high-tech contribution:

"Wraggle Taggle Gypsies" on my Hohner MIDI Melodeon App for iPad

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wn7WqrMJ984

The app is controlling ThumbJam, a sample-based synthesizer app running in the background on the iPad. The MIDI Melodeon app is set for B/C configuration (D/G also available). ThumbJam is using an accordion patch I sampled from my restored 1930's vintage Hohner instrument. The patch is available for free to anyone who uses ThumbJam.

The sound recorded is exactly what comes out of the iPad headphone jack/speakers, there are no external effects or EQ.

Late again--sorry. Don't know how it could take me more than a month to learn 10 measures of music, but there you go.

Only four years late on this one, but at least it is March, so its the right month!

Here is a video of this tune/song I have done an 'audition' piece.
Worth watching until the last two verses, if only to see me in a different light ;-)

Hope its ok!.

Enjoy,

Hi Clive,

I trawled the net for versions of this tune which I used to sing in primary school and loved.  I just wanted to say that I love the way you play this, especially the little syncopations/anticipations in the melody.   I often watch your videos if I'm looking for another approach to a tune. One to learn for sure!

Les

btw I'm not adverse to a bit of reverb myself by the way!
