Another thumbs-up for the Music Room, Cleckheaton
« on: March 01, 2013, 06:35:37 PM »

I thought it was worth a quick note here to say what good service I got from the Music Room last week. I lost count of how long I spent there but they didn't rush me and they let me try what I liked in the shop or in a more private practice room. A very big thanks to them and especially to Jon Loomes who offered patient, helpful advice and opinions, and also played things on the different boxes so I could hear what the audience would hear (if only I could play that well). In the end, I left as the happy owner of a lovely D/G Dino Baffetti Carnival II, although I was strongly tempted by the Sandpiper. A great place to browse and buy.

I was there yesterday looking at boxes. Was given a free cup of coffee. Wasted a lot of their time. Didn't buy anything significant. But what nice people.

Never been there, but couldn't fault their service. Only dealt with them over the phone, buying a Bafetti and a Roland Fr18 . Superb comms and knowledgeable advice.
PS. I have no business connection with them at all. It's  just great to know that there is a shop out there that you can trust.

And if you can't visit easily, if you want to try something (and are willing to pay for it up front) they'll take it back and refund you as a matter of course. I did this recently...they had something I wanted to try, they sent it so it arrived the next morning. I had it for a couple of days, decided it wasn't worth the price being asked (it was being sold for a customer, so the price wasn't negotiable...not the Music Room's fault), phoned them back. They arranged for the box to be collected, and a few days later the payment was back in my account. All it took was a few phone calls, and as others have said, a friendly and knowledgeable service...

Cheers,

I had good service from The Music Room too, when I bought one of their Primo D/G Scholars. I placed the order Sunday, and received the box in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on the following Friday.

In another thread there was some talk about the clackety-clack from melodeons; the Primo is silent in this area. In his demonstration video, John Loomes asserts that the Primo is good starter box; I think he is correct. Also, the price was a lot less than shown on their web-site where VAT may be included; the reduction covered the international delivery charge. There was no import duty either.

I had a really hard time from them when I want to buy a gig bag for my new box. Expected to be in and out fairly quickly, but the staff delayed me while they all had a go on a Gaillard  >:(

Seconded!
I've not had the good fortune to visit them, but "remote transactions" have always been first-class. When they say something (always promptly), I know:-
a) it's true
b) it's based on knowledge, experience and understanding customers
and
c) if something will happen or be done, (e.g. shipping times), then it will be.

Rare qualities these days, unfortunately.

Wish the same could be said of The Music Room in Exeter. Melodeons are rarely seen there..... >:(

As far as I am aware there are two completely different companies trading with very similar names : The Music Room, which is the one we all love in Cleckheaton West Yorks. : the other is Music Room,   (without 'THE') this one is a multi national company which appears to have bought out lots of local music stores.

Ah!You've answered a question that's been bugging me for ages Ken. How could a place like Cleckheaton's Music Room with its unfailing high standards have a sister establishment that was so melodeon averse? We are very badly served in Exeter since Bill Greehalgh's closed some years ago. [Unless you want a guitar...] :'(

It is indeed a brilliant shop at Cleckheaton. I managed to call in a couple of weeks ago when I had an appointment in Yorkshire and had a great hour trying a couple of semitone boxes. JL wasn't there but I have met him on a previous occasion and all the staff are always helpful and very patient.

Quite taken with a SH Hohner Gaelic B/C and also tried a Sandpiper C#/D, although as my only experience is playing a DG I found it difficult to decide which, if any, were suitable, as I am completely unfamiliar with the layouts. I have read previous advice on here that C#/D might be an easier transition from D/G, but I couldn't make much sense of the outer row. Hadn't thought about being cheeky enough to ask for sale and return on SH stock as I didn't imagine that was possible, but the nice thing about The Music Room is that you feel you could go back a number of times until you are sure, although the distance makes that a bit impractical for me.

You were the best. Do you remember the time we filled John Turner's shoes with porridge?  ;)

What a waste of porridge!Mmmm, late breakfast?

I do remember sitting playing in the shop with Squeezy until lunchtime opening (Bill immediately disappeared) and we could get on with trading in my old box at a sensible price!  Still got the BPII, which gets an outing whenever I have to lug a box around towns all day for the Morris.  It was an hour's drive to Oxford, a bus ride to the castle and a twenty minute walk to the shop but now we have nothing!

Yeah, it would be very very handy to have something half as good as the Cleckheaton store somewhere south of Birmingham (and not in London).
