Lovely tune, it's been on my 'to learn' list for a few weeks and it's about time it got nudged to the top of the list.

Here's a transcription from Clive's video. It can't possibly be definitive because Clive doesn't play it exactly the same each time through...

Here's what I *meant* to play, and what I would consider to be a vanilla version of the tune.

Code: [Select]
X: 1
T: William Irwin's No. 2
O: William Irwin, Lake District
Z: Anahata (from Clive Willliams on You Tube)
D: Cock And Bull 'A Cock and Bull Story' Irwin's No 1,2 and 3
M: 4/4
L: 1/8

Ah - significantly different in several places. Thanks very much for that, which I will now take as definitive as possible so far, and try to learn. Perhaps I should delete the ABC in my earlier posting.

Being an irrationally avid supporter of English tunes I would normally be more than happy to vote for an Irwin tune but now it turns out it probably isn't one. (Probably turn out to be French! >:E)
That fact that it doesn't appear in the VMP manuscript may be because it has been published elsewhere in a book that is still in print. VMP is at pains not to tread on anyone's copyright toes. However, usually when that happens they quote a couple of bars and refer to the alternative publication, so - anybody's guess, really, and without a title it will be hard to find out.

Quote
I'm also busting a gut to try and play the fiendish Blew Bell and loving it.
Oh, it wasn't just me having a hard time with it, then... (but enjoying too: what masochists we are!)

Has anyone ever heard any lyrics for New Land?

The original transcription I have (I actually bought Otis Tomas' tunebook) doesn't have any alongside the tune, so I would assume any there are around are later additions.
There's a rather sweetly played version of it by a Japanese trio here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXgvuIjOPVw, which I stumbled across quite a while ago.

On two row box it works best on the inside row. Emmanuel plays an AD box on that recording. If you play it on the D row of an 8 bass  DG then you miss the F# chord which is quite a big loss IMHO.

Finally got round to taking a look at this.
So If I transpose from D up to F, I'm back in the original key (allegedly) and I can play it on my C/F Club. That should sound nice!

I can't find what purports to be Wm Irwin's No 2 in the MS either, and I suppose I should know. It's a nice tune though. Anahata is correct, I would have indicated if I had missed out tunes for some reason.
As I pointed out in the ABC, this was a transcription from Anne Gilchrist's transcription, made perhaps sometime pre WW2, of Irwin's 19thC MSS. Nobody seems to know where that now is, though I suspect it's in Glasgow with the rest of Frank Kidson's collection. Gilchrist was not above selective editing or even skipping of tunes, so it's entirely possible that someone 30 odd years ago made a trip to Glasgow and that's where the tune came from. But that is pure conjecture.

The composer of The New Land, Otis Tomas, has a website here: http://www.fiddletree.com/ about his violin and guitar making, and his fiddletree project. Well worth a read.

Doh - it looks like neither of the English tunes'll win. :( I've wondered before if a 'Not the TOTM' would be a good thread for grumpy so and so's like me or does that just make me sound like a sore loser? :-[

Option 2 ;)

I think it's good practice to play whatever comes up, whether we like it or not, or else we're going to stay stuck in our comfort zones... which is why I don't just arbitrarily choose something... because *I'd* stay in my comfort zone. Besides, an election is fun! I didn't particularly like this month's choice, but I learned a lot playing it (and designed an accidental row in the process).

Cheers,

Clive

This month my approach was to do the one I wanted AND the one that won the poll. That covers both your ideas/motivations. (and I did a third tune from the list, which I felt it was about time I learned).

I don't generally vote for a tune I already know, especially if one of the alternatives looks worth learning or an interesting challenge.

Wise words, both. (:) I agree Clive that the poll is fun but sometimes it's a bit like following the England cricket team - before the start you think they might beat a decent team and after about 10 overs it becomes obvious they've no chance!  :'(  ;D

I agree totally Clive, I've discovered some great tunes via ToTM and also found some tunes that I really didn't like much at the start of the month have become favourites by the time I've learnt them. Others I never really get to like but all of them teach me something.

Really pleased to see 'The New Land' doing so well this month, I first saw it on Lester's blog but didn't really think much to it. Then Lester played it a session and I was hooked - in fact it was almost next on my to-learn list for a bit. Until another pretty tune drifted past  (:).  Hopefully ToTM will give me the chance to really give this one some attention.

Ah I have an AD box in bits on the bench...just need to get it back together to play this then (:)

To add to this...i can play it as Emmanuel is playing it on my DG Pariselle (with Emmanuel's layout) as this does have an F# bass, plus it has a push D on the helper row etc..
