that would be my artistically unresolved  ending --  on the E (with vibrato) instead of the expected final D ;)

Masterful Jack, the whole thing. Deciding not to resolve the final cadence leaves the sound of chalk on blackboard ringing long after the tune ends, or indeed fails to. :D

I'd appreciate any suggestions!  Still not really comfortable with melodeon.

Quote
My only suggestion is that you adjust your straps to move the keyboard nearer the centre-line of your body as your right hand/arm looks a little cramped up where you currently have it.

Not only that, but you're holding the box up like a concertina, rather than suspending it from the straps (or resting it on your thigh). This means the whole thing is moving around - what you want is for the treble side to be stationary while you move the bass end.

Thanks, that's helpful.  I'm starting to adjust my playing position.

Here's my try at the tune on my Hohner B/C:

http://youtu.be/p4OAn5Yz5AE

Normally when I play in Irish sessions, which is my main interest, I don't play the bass side at all.

I really appreciate these Tune of the Month challenges as an opportunity to work on the left side of the instrument.

The American version of Cuckoo's Nest is two parts, and the tune is decidedly major.  I can't play it on my BC box yet.  The late great John Hartford wrote a song to it played here on Youtube.  My favorite lyric is "it's watching how you operate when the chips are down that makes me come on slowly".

A tune I love to dance to and consequentially don't normally get to play much, which my husband would probably say is a good thing.  As usual I can play much better with the camera off but I think it is getting easier each month.

Ack! not for me, sorry. Too plinky plonk and over simplified. Moving the tune into a major key robs it of both its identity and purpose. The minor key gives this tune all of its swing and growly appeal!

Cuckoo's Nest

Now't wrong with this other than it's a bit short, but that's not for me to say as I struggle to make it once through anything in one piece. :(

Thanks  :|||: (:)

It is a bit short, mainly because I don't have any variations that I'm happy with and couldn't really see the point of just repeating it.  I've been stuck in a bit of a rut with progress recently have been working quite succesfully on repeating tunes reliably.  Small steps.

'Tis a great tune to dance to though so if the Squire is reading this it wasn't me on the video, I can't play it and please let me dance it   :M

That sounds like a major achievement, Helena.  My videos are usually short too, but it's because I know that if I've played it through once with minimal stuff ups there is high chance that the next time through it will go to pieces.  So well done! (:)

You would not believe the amount of swearing etc in Lester's Shed when I record a batch of videos. I try to always do 3 times through but the number of times that leads to difficulties is uncountable. Probably accounts for the only thing approaching a smile you ever see is at the end of a tune, usually means it is take 99 and it's gone OK  (:)

That is encouraging - I have a mental threshold or two or three minor mistakes, or one show stopper.

With practice (and breathing exercises. And anger management) the showstopper drifts out to its most frustrating position, three quarters through the second B of the second time through.

Hi,
this is my entry for this month http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=legcjkdOS4I&feature=youtu.be
Played on my new old hohner in A/D as i received it, that means not really in tune and with integrated drumkit...
Hope you will enjoy it.

A friend of mine just tell me that i wrote "TOTM for april 2023" in the video, so it's likes it comes from the future... I'm affraid, i don't play better than know.

I have today uploaded a couple of versions of Cuckoo's Nest to Soundcloud. Hope these are appropriate and of interest.

When I first arrived in Australia 30+ years ago, I was asked to play for a bush dance demonstration group along with other musicians. I learned  a version of Cuckoo's Nest from them, which was used for a couple dance known as the Four Sisters Barn Dance and played as a medley with the original published music. It went something like this....

https://soundcloud.com/klappo/cuckoos-nest-four-sisters-barn

Interesting in that the A music is similar to the Ilmington Morris version, then the B music is that of a bawdy song, widely known and loved....

A while back, I needed another tune to go along with The Cuckoo Waltz, so thought I'd try Cuckoo's Nest with a change of rhythm as an appropriate choice (in terms of name at any rate). Seems to work....

https://soundcloud.com/klappo/cuckoo-waltzes

I am currently recording a few more tunes for Soundcloud upload, played on some of my restored MAD acquisitions (with photos!). By all means drop in from time to time and see what else might be of interest.

https://soundcloud.com/klappo

Enjoy!

Here's an attempt at the tune on my Roland FR-18 V-Accordion, configured as a 2-row B/C melodeon:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0D3LxXJjeM

The FR-18 is a lot of fun to play, but a heavy (12 lbs) and somewhat awkward beast compared to my acoustic instrument (5.5 lbs) so it's a bit rough, but gives some idea of what's possible.
