Quotes
« on: April 11, 2013, 09:37:08 AM »

Hi gang, it appears I'm not getting quotes right or reply to posts . Being fairly ancient I'm not particularly computer literate. I use an I-pad. Chris Ryall has been trying to help me but I think I'm doing something wrong. I've looked at the help section on this site but it seems all gobbeldegook to me.
Help!
PS. I think it's something to do with deleting the unnecessary text before replying .

Hi,
to use "quote", clic on the "quote" button on the right of the post that you want to quote, then you can write your answer under the "quote".

Thanks Etienne, but if I just wanted a section of text from the previous post, how much if any should I delete?

You can delete all that you want from the message that you quote but not what is between the [  ] at the begining and the end of the message.

Thanks so much, I think I've got it. A bit slow these old duffers!

      Thanks Etienne,

Testing Testing

That's fine. There are may be others who don't find this intuitive.  Here's what it looks like in edit box. Commentary in BOLD is not part of the message!
Code: [Select]
THE FIRST
STARTS HERE, MATCHES THE
AT THE BOTTOM
EARLIER QUOTES INCLUDED AUTOMATICALLY
 Thanks Etienne,
END OF 'EARLIER' QUOTE
Testing Testing
THIS MATCHES THAT "[quote author=Nick Collis Bird.." AT THE VERY TOP!

So
1. Every [ quote] matches a [ /quote] further down the page.
2. If there are several levels they stack inside each other - like Russian dolls.
The 09:49 quote inside the 09:58 in the 'forum' version at the top matches this structure nicely  ;)

Stacked quotes can looks messy and become very hard to read - judicious editing is a good thing.  Several forums automatically chop off more than 100 lines of quotes of quotes of quotes!  >:E  I use iPad too, and deleting is a bit of a pain  :-\ but mangling of the text can easily be avoided by writing all your own stuff here at the bottom, below the final
. Look forward to reading it!

Funny that, I hadn't thought that tags might be unintuitive   :-\

Dead easy if you are used to their HTML equivalents, but otherwise my brain would take me along a <quote> .. Do the quote .. Carry on method, which of course doesn't do the job  :|glug
