moving east
« on: April 15, 2013, 09:02:24 PM »

Due to circumstances beyond my control[ alright, bossy but caring daughter wants aged pa closer to her] I'm being prised off my Devon hill and relocated in Brighton. Anyone know any sessions within walking distance of Preston Roundabout? :( :||:

I was about to suggest Lewes.  I lived in Brighton for 14 years myself.  If you get there in time for the Brighton Fringe festival in May I'd recommend going to see Nick Pynn.  He's a great musician, and if there's folky stuff going on in town I reckon he'd know about it.

Comprehensive list for Sussex etc - all tastes, five or six in Brighton, at least a couple walkable.

Given that getting comfy is all about people, you could do worst than start with this lot

Right by the Lord Nelson?  Handy for the Lanes then.  I envy you.

Brighton is an ideal place if you're 20-odd or retired.  For those of us who have to get to a workplace, it's a right pain in the backside.  Very hip and cool place, not very.... functional in the traffic department, if you know what I mean.  :)

I always loved festival time.  Helped out at the Brighton Fringe and the Comedy Festival in the autumn a few times.  Komedia often has some interesting acts on, comedy and music.  Oh, and there's Bom Bane's cafe in George Street in Brighton that a friend of mine runs.  Interesting tables.  She often has interesting music nights on too.  In fact, Brighton you can't MOVE for interesting shops and live music.

The Lewes Saturday Folk Club have a good programme of workshops, sadly you've missed a recent Andy Cutting one. There is also the Royal Oak Folk Club in Lewes which is very popular.

Thanks to all you Melnetters for the above sugestions. Its cheered me up no end and made the forthcoming move much more positive. I'm tickled pink with the idea of WALKING to a session instead doing a 60 mile round trip in a beatup pickup in the dark ..... ;D :||: :|glug

Loads of good stuff in Lewes - also, the mighty Quinns (Dan and Matt) live very near to Brighton.

better make sure bossy but caring doesn't see the list or she'll be worrying about you roaming the streets of Brighton on a nightly basis instead of tucked up warm in your slippers!
