Poll: Tune of the Month for May 2013
« on: April 23, 2013, 11:46:57 PM »

Hi everyone - the selection for May:

Marche des Carbrettaires - Another narrow miss last month, and here played by Lester, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjfUmXXH8kk ; a cracking French march.

Theme Vannetaise - Lester, what would we do without you? Here's Lester playing this tune of indeterminate origin that keeps popping up in unusual places: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DceTa6GymCw

Royal Scots Polka - Not a tune I've heard before I'm ashamed to say, but a rather nice polka from... Scotland! No existing melodeon videos of it on youtube that I could find, but I did find this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlxXAVWTyrc

Young Collins - Can't believe this didn't win by a landslide when we last ran it, so let's try again. Young Collins - 2 for the price of 1 here; at least 2 *completely* different morris tunes with this name, take your pick! There's this... typically played in G major: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6K59eyq6sEk, or there's this weird and wonderful thing, here played by our own Pip Ives: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQTvuvtQ6E0 (2nd tune, 2:08 mins in), which you may remember Roger Watson playing on the English Melodeon Player's album. According to our (somewhat undocumented) rules, if this one wins, either of these tunes, or anything else named Young Collins, is fair game!

Cheers,

Have fun!

Clive

the you tube clip of Jimmy Shand playing the Royal Scots Polka is from parlaphone recording F3501 recorded in 1942.  The tune was composed by Jim Denholme

If YC wins I was going to slip the Oddington tune in as my contribution - not that many people play it. Personally I much prefer it to the usual Bledington tune.

You'll find the ABCs and  PDF version for 'Royal Scots Polka' at JC's Tune Finder - here: http://trillian.mit.edu/~jc/cgi/abc/tunefind  At least it sounds like it to my bad ears.

As far as I can see  from the midi  the second tune on the list (39324)  is The Royal Scots Polka  first two parts, possibly the pipe version.  The tune was written by J Denholme . The first tune on the list is by somebody else

Below is the first version in JC's Tune Finder by Ramsey. This is the same tune as in the uTube selection. The uTube tune has only two parts as does the version below, while Denholm's has a number of parts (I didn't count them). The second tune in JC's is the Denhom tune and is the same as on your hand-written score, but it is not the uTube tune.

I may not know much, but this I'm pretty sure of.

Best,
Paul N.

It seems like Young Collins will win unless two more people vote on the French tune. I will really try to participate this month. Can anyone help me with advice on how to manage the bass part on YC?? I just learned it on the concertina and it goes fine, but I just can't do it on the melodeon. Is it tricky or am I just doing it wrong?? Do you play an Eminor in the beginning of the B part? Is the next chord a C?

I am still waiting for a tune that I actually know in advance to win in tune of the month - 20 months in and counting and I am still learning the 'wrong' tunes! 8)
