Tune of the Month for May 2013: Young Collins
« on: May 01, 2013, 12:00:29 AM »

Young Collins, a tune with many versions and variants!

There's this... typically played in G major: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6K59eyq6sEk, or there's this weird and wonderful thing, here played by our own Pip Ives: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQTvuvtQ6E0 (2nd tune, 2:08 mins in), which you may remember Roger Watson playing on the English Melodeon Player's album. According to our (somewhat undocumented) rules, either of these tunes, or anything else named Young Collins, is fair game!

Courtesy of Lester, here's ABC for a couple of variants:

Cheers Lester! Happy playing everyone and good luck!

A rough and ready early post, done in a rush of enthusiasm before I go out for my second Morris outing of the day.

Ditto rough and ready.
http://youtu.be/EljSQNeNUbw
previously I'd been learning the tune for the whole month, getting all the mics out, dim the lights, and then .......... it would come undone or I'd be sent to Dublin and miss the end of the month.
This time, I listened to Lester for ten minutes, picked up the box :||:, learnt the tune, set the ipad rolling and had it up on youtube before the face paints were dry.
So please excuse the sound quality, wobbly camera, grimacing and duff notes - all totally intentional  (:)

So here it is... at around 1 min you can see a momentary flare of light - a meteorite landing nearby I think..  (:)

Here's the Longborough version of the tune, with a slightly amended B part. I think its a much better tune than the oft played and IMHO hackneyed Bledington version.

Enjoy!

Yep, it's a D/G Dino Baffetti Binci special prototype!

I first heard it at Cricklade in 1977 played by a chap called Chris (I think), from Padstow (I think), who used to play his melodeon horizontally (the box, nt Chris!)

 ;)  It's also less 'fiddly' than the usually heard version. Plus its got a nice Em chord!  >:E

OK, here's mine.  Pretty rough and ready but I'm posting it because it represents a huge leap forward for me in that this is the first time I've been able to download the TOTM ABC and play the tune straight off from the dots.  The basses sort of just happened too, although  may need some more work. The video is also a first-taker.

14 months since I first picked up a box and 10 months since I got my pokerwork... I'm hooked  :||: :|glug :|||:

<Morris Foreman Rant>

The B music should not be
E2 D2 EF G2|A2 A2 G3 A|B2 A2 Bc d2|e2 e2 dcBA|
GABc d2 d2|c2 e2 A2 Bc|d2 d2 e2 dc|B2 A2 G4:||

It should be

E2 D2 EF G2|A2 A2 G3 A|B2 A2 Bc d2|e2 e2 d4|
GABc d2 d2|c2 e2 A2 Bc|d2 d2 e2 dc|B2 A2 G4:||

This because in the Bledington tradition there is no anacrusical hop prior to the first morris step in the hey (or any other figure for that matter). The little run up that is now ubiquitous almost forces dancers to put a hop in which is bad morris.

</Morris Foreman Rant>

ps yes I know it's my ABC and I probably play the run as well but it is still not right  ;)

I'm glad about that, because that's how I play it. I sometimes put the run in for variety, since I don't actually play for anyone to dance to. I was pondering this very point last night. I'm still not sure where I got the run from.

I didn't know this tune before I downloaded the ABC from the top of this thread but this amended version sounds better to my ears in the context of the rest of the tune.
