I've really enjoyed the variety of this month's postings, but honestly I'm so confused now that I have no idea what version, if any, I'm playing. Probably safest just to call it "Sorta Young Collins-Kalamazoo."

Wow, so many different variations :). I really enjoyed listening to them all. This month I'm finally participating, for the first time since June 2010 or something like that. Thanks Lester for giving me the courage to try to learn the tune :). It's anything but perfect but I managed to learn it after all!

This melodeon is tuned MQ, Q being a set of harmonizing reeds pitched below the normal M reeds and often known as "quintro tuning".
Really interesting sound. I don't think I have come across a box tuned that way before. Very nice playing too.

Here's my first video for TOTM.

I've gone for the simplest version, with no twiddly bits to confuse dancers.
Also not too many repetitions, not with this sound quality!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRfGKoi9Oq0

I'd appreciate advice on
1. What sort of microphone should I buy?
2. Posture etc

As a "bonus", on this video, I unwisely try and combine it with a tangentially-related tune...

Love that box! Sadly it doesn't suit you at all so you should give it to me.

Here's a similar old 12 bass Hohner that's come up on US Ebay:

I've not had much time for melodeons this month, but as morris tunes seem to come as naturally as anything will to me on the melodeon, tried to have a go in one take...

http://youtu.be/moWutxcW9Lw

Thanks.

Sorry, I've just noticed the video repeats itself on YouTube. I'm not too sure how that happened.

I've dusted off the C/F Dallape for this one.
 http://youtu.be/mPQO_n_5P8Y

It's played in F in the top octave but because it's a 3 voice LMM it sounds bright without being piercing.
Recorded straight off the camera,no separate audio, and my first go at using Final Cut. I'll get onto titles and such next time.

(It fades out at the end because I went on messing about and of course it all went wrong!)

It sounds very nice in F! I like your different chord choices too. Very nice indeed.

That left hand was very good indeed, nice example of "less is more". Are you a southpaw?

No, right-handed.  Perhaps it comes from playing with "piano accordionists" (said in a hushed voice) in my early morris career.

However - check out

for brilliant left-handed melodeon playing.

Just under the wire, and it's weak, but next month's not going to get any easier, so here's my first tune of the month in the month, on the La Vera BCC#:

A very basic version, just squeaking in with two minutes to go.

Slightly late due to a few technical issues, but never mind.

I'll have to admit that I didn't really like the tune when I first heard it, but I kind of warmed to it once I started playing it.  Odd that, especially as when I started I'd forgotten the tune and was working (rather slowly) purely from the dots which I've found is not necessarily a good starting place for me.

Well done folks; end of the month, so time to move on. Late contributions always welcome as ever; just bolt them on the end here.

Cheers,

Clive

One heck of a late contribution, filmed it in May and its been sitting on my desktop since in a ridiculous format. Came back to it today and sorted it out, so here's my crack at it: http://youtu.be/mMla8XsjDJg

An even later submission!  I was going to post a second time to Beginners Showcase, but then decided I should be a bit more bold!  So for my second video attempt, here is a go at Young Collins (Bledington):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFawcochSZo

Overall, this tune has been a great learning experience even though it has taken about six weeks to get to this point.  I hope I have done it justice (:)

Cheers. Nigel
