I think it's kind of a moot point telling all of the forum that a PM is sent, when there is an indicator for the user receiving the message that they have one.

I am not singling you out as many people on the forum do it! I just think it is redundant

Even at work someone sends me an email and as it arrives I get an instant message in Communicator from then telling me they just sent me an email. I open the email and it prompts me that the user would like to get a message that I opened it! I always say no on principle...I remember when you sent a letter and it never got there for a few days  :o

I think it's a very good idea, I've missed the "[1] New message" alert before, so going onto my thread and seeing someone has sent me a message is really helpful, + it shows other posters there been interest in whatever it is

Yes, I agree - the message indicator doesn't exactly flash lights and sound a hooter... (well, not on my PC, anyway. YMMV)

Am I the only one who gets a pop up window telling me I have a new message as soon as I log on? Is it not big enough?

Any member can get this.  You need to set a flag in your profile as follows:

go to Profile > Modify Profile > Personal messaging > tick the box for pop up.   There is also an option for email notification of a PM.

Theo beat me to it - just found it and checked it.

I do get emails, but sometimes miss them if the board is busy.

Thanks for the pop-up tip, Theo.  Like others here, Ive been guilty of 'missing' a message for a while, hence the  'belt and braces' approach.  ;)

Cheers for splitting this into a new thread Theo, apologies for going off topic!

I still stand by my opinion that leaving a quick post saying "PM Sent" is, in general, a good habit, stops the thread being buried by new threads (handy if its an advertisement), and for some reason that I can't quite put into words, it almost feels... Polite? I think its worth doing, even if it does annoy some people ;)

Well there is no forum rule about this.  It's a personal choice whether to post a "PM sent" message.

Topic trimmed to just leave the advice and remove most of the personal opinions.
