Both English (system) concertinas and Duet concertinas play the same note on each button push and pull, however that is about the only thing that they have in common.
On English (system) concertinas the notes that are on the written music staff on the lines are all on the left hand side, and those written in the spaces are all on the right hand side.
On a Duet concertina the left hand side plays lower notes, and the right hand plays higher notes.
Typically the left hand side might have all the notes from Tenor C through Middle C up to an an octave above middle C. With the right hand side having all the notes from Middle C up another 2 octaves and a few more.  So that the notes from middle C to an octave above middle C can be played on either hand this is the "overlapping octave"

My experience is that an english concertina is great fun and I think it works well for French trad music. I enjoy being able to pick out a tune in any key without having to worry about the fingering or bellows direction. I also enjoy the ability to play around with chords - since I have to make up every chord from its respective notes, I'm beginning to get a little better since of what makes them and how to use them.

Regarding the lack of instruments in France for a trial, I know there are a couple of French players on concertina.net. Perhaps a post on that forum could give you some leads on where to find an instrument to try.

last news : I've bought my concertina in Ars festival, in very good conditions and terms.
It's a small Lachenal duet concertina (picture attached).

I'm very happy with it and I'm working hard to learn "à la Claire fontaine" with both hands which is not as easy as it seems ! (things always needing to start with the essential don't they ?  )

Thk you to everybody for the "enlightments" they gave me, and from now on, I will keep talking only about melodeons and accordéons diatoniques, reserving concertina talking for another forum I have registered on.
